Biography

Martinex T'Naga was a male Pluvian and was an inhabitant of the planet Pluto in the 30th century. (Marvel Super-Heroes v1 #18) It was said that his ancestors were from the continent of Africa on Earth. (Guardians of the Galaxy v1 #18)

Around two months ago, his people received word that the Badoon planned an invasion of the solar system and they came to evacuate Pluto as a result. Martinex stayed behind to sabotage some of the facilities on the planet where he was supposed to rendezvous with the rest of his people but became stranded on the world. Whilst there, he encountered a Jovian named Charlie-27 who had fled the Badoon and arrived through the tele-port depot. The two then began to work together where they escaped a number of Badoon patrols sent to capture any survivors. The pair later used the tele-port system where they ended up on Earth where they ended up battling another captive named Major Vance Astro. However, the three humans began to work together against their common foe where they escaped and formed the Guardians of the Galaxy as they planned to liberate the solar system from the alien invaders. (Marvel Super-Heroes v1 #18)

Eventually, the Guardians drove the Badoon from Earth, with Martinex executing their leader Koord, but they were unable to fit in with post-war life on Earth and departed on a mission to explore the galaxy. (Marvel Presents v1 #3)

Martinex was a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy for years during the fight for freedom against the Badoon. After driving the Badoon oppressors back to their galaxy, Martinex and the others stayed together as explorers traveling the universe.

Martinex would become the reluctant leader of the group for over two years. He believed that Vance Astro or even Charlie-27 would be better leaders than him for the team. He even offered the spot to Vance, but he refused, saying that Martinex was indeed a good leader. Martinex was nearly killed in a battle with Brahl of Force. Starhawk was able to save him by infusing him with his light, thus changing Martinex's skin.

After the team returned to Earth, Martinex made his announcement. He would be leaving the team to try and form a bigger group to really combat the evil in all of the galaxy. He planned for much more than the few that they had. This group would eventually be formed as the Galactic Guardians.

Eventually, Martinex left the team to begin forming franchise versions of the Guardians, called the Galactic Guardians. (Guardians of the Galaxy v1 #18)

Eventually, Martinex left the team to form a larger version of the Guardians, known as the Galactic Guardians. This team was summoned to help rescue an imperiled planet full of innocents. The Galactic Guardians were initially made up of alternate future versions of Wonder Man, Firelord, the Vision, Phoenix, and Ghost Rider. (Galactic Guardians v1 #4)

Notes

  • Martinex was created by Arnold Drake and Gene Colan where he made his first appearance in Marvel Super-Heroes v1 #18 (January, 1969).
  • Writer/artist Jim Valentino commented, "No one could draw [Martinex] the same way twice. It was impossible and it was a pain in the butt. What I did was streamline him according to the planes in the body that Andrew Loomis delineated in his seminal book, Figure Drawing for All It's Worth."

Alternate Versions

  • In Spider-Boy Team-Up #1 (1997), an alternate version of the character appeared in the Amalgam Comics crossover reality that was designated as Earth-12772 in the Multiverse. This version was a merger between Martinex from Marvel Comics and Brainiac 5 from DC Comics where they became the character named Martinex 5.

Films

  • In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Martinex appeared in the setting of the live-action film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where he was portrayed by actor Michael Rosenbaum. Martinex T'Naga is one of the elite members of the Ravagers. Martinex was once part of a special team of Ravagers that included Stakar Ogord, Yondu Udonta, Charlie-27, Aleta Ogord, Mainframe, and Krugarr. The team disbanded sometime later, but Martinex still remained as Stakar's right-hand man. Martinex was on Contraxia with Stakar when they encountered Yondu, years after the Ravagers had disowned him for child trafficking. Stakar and Yondu got into a brief argument, where Stakar told him the Flames of Ogord won't shine over Yondu's funeral, for he had betrayed the Ravager code. Days later, Martinex and Stakar were informed by Rocket, a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, that Yondu had sacrificed his life to save Guardian Star-Lord and the galaxy. Stakar then reunited numerous factions of the Ravagers to attend Yondu's funeral, which Martinex was present for. Following this, Martinex was briefly reunited with his former teammates.
  • In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Martinex appeared in the setting of the live-action film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where he was portrayed again portrayed by actor Michael Rosenbaum. By 2026 all of the Ravager factions had come together to become the United Ravagers. The Ravagers were hired on a job to help infiltrate Orgoscope. When an unknown ship arrived, the Ravagers boarded it, intending to steal from it. However, it turned out to be the Guardians of the Galaxy, who had contacted Gamora and asked for their help. Gamora joined the Guardians on their mission, and when they were done, Martinex went with Mainframe to pick her up from Knowhere.
