Biography
Izo was the name of a male human who centuries ago came to be trained as a ninja. Hundreds of years ago, he was a member of the Hand but grew disgusted at how they had changed to be without honor. As a result, he blinded himself so he could not see how their clan had fallen from grace leading to him departing their ranks. (Daredevil v1 #500) Such was his reputation that he was mentioned in the Book of the Iron Fist. (Daredevil v2 #113)
At some point, he encountered a blind warrior and trained him with this person taking the name Stick. During these years, he was known to regularly visit the mortal world in order to gamble and drink. However, around 55 years ago, a meeting among the Chaste at the Wall led to them voting Izo out of the leadership of their clan. As a result, he departed their ranks as well. (Daredevil v1 #500)
Around 18 years ago, Izo came to see a young Matthew Murdock after he was admitted into a hospital following an accident that gave him powers. He was known to had been responsible for informing Stick about the boy. (Daredevil v1 #500) Izo once told Stick that one of two souls were capable of bringing down the Hand with this being Murdock. (Daredevil v1 #501)
One day, he came to find a young woman who had managed to escape from a human trafficking scheme being operated by the Yakuza. Izo came to train her to be a skilled assassin where she took the name of Lady Bullseye where he involved her in his plan against the Hand with him claiming that it was so she could take over the ninja cult one day. (Daredevil v1 #500)
He later arrived at Matt Murdock's home where he easily defeated the Black Tarantula and left him unconscious on the living room floor. Izo was looking through Murdock's fridge for drink when Matt arrived where he said he wanted his aid in destroying the Hand. (Daredevil v2 #112) During Daredevils fight with Lady Bullseye, a number of Hand ninjas assisted her in attacking Matt Murdock who was only saved by the timely intervention of Izo. (Daredevil v2 #113)
Later on, he came to meet Daredevil who was by the rooftop and observed a funeral held for over a 100 people killed at the hands of Bullseye. Izo came to hear how the young hero lamented their deaths and came to state that if the cost was one person's soul being damned whilst many were saved then it was a price worth paying. It was then that the elderly ninja master came to find himself surrounded by the Hand who Daredevil had called as he decided to embrace the role of being their leader. For his initiation though, he was required to sacrifice the life of an innocent and reluctantly decided Izo to be chosen. Izo was then taken to the Hand's headquarters where Daredevil seemingly killed the old man with a powerful strike to the chest. (Daredevil v1 #501) In reality, Izo had simply slowed his heartbeat to the point of appearing dead in order to fool the Hand with Daredevil being aware of the deception. After being revived, he then looked for Daredevil to help destroy the Hand from inside their ranks. (Daredevil v1 #502) Relocating to Chinatown, Izo looked to push his plan in destroying the Hand but Daredevil did not wish to be manipulated by the elderly ninja master. Instead, he urged Izo to leave New York in order to hide the fact that he was still alive from the Hand. (Daredevil v1 #503)
During the battle against Daredevil and the Hand, Izo approached the various heroes in the Shadowland to inform them that Matt Murdock had become possessed by the Beast of the Hand. (Shadowland v1 #3)
Overview
Personality and attributes
He was noted for his love of drinking and gambling with him making regular trips around the world to indulge in this behavior. (Daredevil v1 #500)
Izo believed that the Chaste could become everything the Hand should had been and not just their good reflection. However, in time, he came to believe that the Chaste themselves had fallen from grace and in time would become as bad as the Hand with their rules. (Daredevil v1 #500)
He was known to had been the mentor of the man that came to be known as Stick. (Daredevil v1 115)
Powers and abilities
He had mastered the technique of controlling his own heartbeat to the point that he could appear dead to others. This was done so by slowing it to own to a few beats per minute enough to fool others whilst he himself was alive but in a deep coma. (Daredevil v1 #502)
Such was his skill that he was able to best the Black Tarantula and slay dozens of Hand ninjas with ease. (Daredevil v2 #112)
