Biography

Origin

Mer-Man was apparently the king of a species of amphibious humanoid creatures who inhabit at least some part of the oceans of the planet Eternia.

Ruler of the undersea realms of Eternia, Mer-Man was forced to serve in the armies of Skeletor after his kingdom was destroyed in a battle with rival ocean clans. His allegiance with Skeletor brings him to the surface world more often then he would like. Lurking deep beneath the Sea of Rakash, Mer-Man awaits the evil call to arms of Skeletor.

Mini-Comics

When Skeletor overheard that one half of the Power Sword was hidden under Eternia's hardest rock, he sent Mer-Man to fight He-Man while Skeletor unearthed the other half from the rock where He-Man had built his house. After Skeletor left to Castle Grayskull, Mer-Man still tried to keep the hero preoccupied, but it was a losing battle once He-Man managed to recover his forcefield garment. With the help of Battle Cat, He-Man vanquished Mer-Man. At a later time, Skeletor was defeated in single combat by He-Man. who threw him into the sea, where he was rescued by Mer-Man, who offered to defeat the hero in exchange for keeping his weapons, which Skeletor agreed. Mer-Man got He-Man's Battle Ram and used it against Man-At-Arms' Wind Raider, but was finally defeated by Stratos' interference. Skeletor decided to take vengeance on He-Man and called Beast Man and Mer-Man. He had both henchmen ambush He-Man on his way to a meeting with Teela. After they overpowered the hero, Mer-Man threw him to the sea where an undersea monster awaited, but He-Man was rescued by Stratos. After the evil henchmen returned with news of He-Man's death, Skeletor tried to break into Castle Grayskull only to find a very much alive He-Man with Stratos and Teela. After his minions were defeated, Skeletor fired his energy-blade on Mer-Man for his failure, but He-Man saved him. However, seeing Skeletor using energy blasts to punish his own minions gave him the idea of using the Heroic Warriors' own energy blasts to make the Evil Warriors flee.

1980s

Hailing from the Crystal Sea, Mer-Man was an aquatic ocean warlord in service to Skeletor. Though he reported to Skeletor at Snake Mountain, Mer-Man usually dwelled within the seas themselves, and often operated independently of Skeletor and the other Evil Warriors; engineering his own water-based schemes. Mer-Man had telepathic abilities which allowed him to control other sea creatures, and had own aquatic henchmen who served as his footsoldiers.

Mer-Man once attempted to sacrifice Zoar to the Sea Demon, Bakkull, which would have allowed him to command Bakkull, the mightiest of the sea demons. The plan was foiled when Zoar was rescued by Man-At-Arms. Twenty years later, Mer-Man attempted to sacrifice Man-At-Arms' daughter, Teela to the same demon, but was foiled again, this time by He-Man and Zoar.

Mer-Man would later strike out alone, using the Pearl of Power to subjugate the underwater city of Aquatica and mind control its people. He also attempted to seal the Variable High-frequency Oscillator for his own sinister ends.

2002

Mer-Man was instrumental in Skeletor's plan to escape the dark hemisphere, searching for years for enough Coridite crystal in the Sea of Rakash to power a device to destroy the Mystic Wall. Mer-Man joined Skeletor's assault on the Royal Palace of Eternia and kidnapped Man-At-Arms, having his enormous, flying fish-pet devour him whole. Man-At-Arms was rescued by Teela, and Mer-Man next turned his attention back to the Coridite crystal, which Skeletor had forgotten about; Mer-Man attempted to use the crystal for himself, but found its powerful difficult to control. Later, Mer-Man attempted to engage Snake Face in combat when the Snake Men returned and seized control of Snake Mountain, but was turned to stone before he could land a blow. His body fell to the floor and smashed into pieces, but he was restored to life by Skeletor, breathing a sigh of relief as his body reformed. Later, Mer-Man claimed the body of Snake Face who was turned to stone by this point as a trophy for his lair.

Revelations

During a flashback, He-Man and Teela are taken prisoner by the minions of a Mer-Man who has allied himself with Skeletor, both sharing the same animosity for the hero to the point of being able to put their many differences aside. Before throwing the two prisoners into the icy Crystal Sea, Mer-Man viciously tells He-Man that once He-Man drowns, the Power Sword will be his. Unfortunately, He-Man and Teela are rescued by Duncan the Man-At-Arms and the trio outwit the villains, with Mer-Man being knocked down after being hit by Man-At-Arms. In the present, many years have passed since magic vanished from Eternia after He-Man and Skeletor's last titanic clash which also resulted in their deaths and many things have changed. Mer-Man and his fellow Aquatican warriors attacked Teela's group during their quest to restore Eternia's magic. He was shown to have a closed right eye with a scar over it. Mer-Man voiced his disdain that Evil-Lyn did not bother to conquer Eternia while leaving the oceans to him. With help from Man-At-Arms, Teela's group defeated Mer-Man and his warriors where he was intimidated to let them pass.

2021

Once the benevolent ruler of the aquatic kingdom of Leviathae, Mer-Man along with his people held King Grayskull in high esteem who brought them culture, security, and power in return for which they aided Grayskull in the war against King Hiss. After King Grayskull died trying to use the Havoc to protect Eternia, the people of Leviathae built his burial place in his honor but so that no one would ever find the remains of the late king, Eldress unleashed the Monstroids war machines. and froze the surface of Leviathae, slowly driving the Underwater People to extinction until only Mer-Man remained who has since harbored a deep resentment against Eldress.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Mer-Man's basic physical type could be described as humanoid, however he has green-blue skin, that in some renditions appears to be of a scaly texture like a fish. He has webbed feet and hands and two fins on either side of his head that appear to be his species' equivalent of ears. He has large bulbous eyes like a fish and a wide, fang-filled mouth. He has no apparent nose, however in some representations he has nostrils. The area around his eyes and upper lip is covered in a layer of rough orange scales; in the animated series the orange scales only surround his eyes not his lips. He wears yellow chest armor that is possibly made of fish hide. He also wears orange trunks. The character's original box art showed him to wear yellow gloves and ankles, although the original figure did not have these painted on (though in the early mini-comics he is shown wearing yellow anklets). In the Filmation series he is seen to wear yellow gloves and boots. He has a muscular build and is at least as tall as an average human male. He is armed with a yellow sword.

Powers and abilities

Mer-Man possesses a number of extra-human powers and abilities. It is unclear how many of these abilities are physiological traits possessed by his species and how many are skills unique to Mer-Man himself. Mer-Man is amphibious, being just as comfortable walking about on land, as he is swimming at the bottom of the ocean, although he is shown to be happier underwater. Although his strength level is not on par with that of He-Man, Mer-Man seems to possess a physical might that is greater than that of the average human. It is clear however, that his strength is much greater underwater than on land. Mer-Man also displays the ability to control a number of aquatic life forms through a primitive form of telepathy. It is stated in some stories that this power works only on cold-blooded sea creatures, having no effect on sea mammals. From time to time Mer-Man's sword also displays special properties: on some occasions causing it to discharge a sort of freeze ray, encasing his targets in ice. It is unclear if the sword is a product of magic or a product of advanced Eternian technology. A trident spear or lance has also been shown as his weapon at times.
