Biography
Cessily Kincaid was a female Mutant born in the modern age on Earth. Initially, she lived a completely normal life where she was the beloved only child of the family until her mutation developed. Her body changed into a metallic, mercury-like substance. (New X-Men v2 #34) Her parents did not know how to deal with this change. While they did not reject her outright, they shipped her off to the Xavier Institute, hoping the neighbors would never know about their mutant daughter. (New X-Men: Hellions v1 #1)
When Dani Moonstar and her recruits gathered to form their team, Cessily was shown as shy but eager to find a place where her unusual appearance would not make her an outcast. In this debut, she revealed her metallic liquid form and stood with the other students as they joined the New Mutants squad, immediately distinguishing herself visually from her peers. (New Mutants v2 #2)
Mercury took part in a training session where she actively demonstrated her combat potential. During the exercise, she reshaped her liquid-metal body to block incoming attacks and used her malleability to evade hits. When a fellow student was endangered, she extended part of her body to shield them, establishing herself as someone willing to risk harm to protect her friends. Her resilience in this scenario marked one of the first times she used her abilities in a coordinated team context rather than just displaying them. (New X-Men: Academy X v1 #12)
Mercury faced one of her most disturbing ordeals when she was abducted by the Facility and subjected to cruel experiments. The scientists sought to harvest her unique biology for their own purposes, forcibly tearing parts of her body away while she remained conscious. Despite the torment, Cessily’s body resisted permanent dismemberment, and she survived the ordeal through her remarkable durability. This event left her deeply traumatized but also highlighted the depth of her endurance and the inherent value of her powers. (New X-Men v2 #23)
Overview
Personality and attributes
In appearance, Mercury was depicted as having a completely metallic body composed of a silvery, liquid-like substance that flowed seamlessly across her form. Her features were smooth and feminine, but her surface constantly shimmered with the reflective sheen of quicksilver. Unlike her human peers, she lacked visible hair, pupils, or traditional skin tone in her transformed state, giving her an otherworldly and inhuman beauty. In student settings, she sometimes wore the standard Xavier Institute uniform, but even then her fluid consistency gave her a distinctive silhouette. (New Mutants v2 #2)
Cessily was portrayed as empathetic, sensitive, and quietly courageous. She longed for acceptance, as her appearance had alienated her from her human family, leaving her to seek belonging among fellow mutants at Xavier’s. Though soft-spoken, she was loyal to her friends and exhibited a protective streak, often using her body to shield others during combat. However, her experiences with prejudice and later experimentation by the Facility also instilled in her a sense of vulnerability and trauma, adding layers of pain beneath her otherwise kind and caring demeanor. (New X-Men v2 #23)
Powers and abilities
Mercury’s mutant ability was her complete transformation into a body of non-toxic liquid mercury. This granted her extraordinary malleability, allowing her to reshape her form into various extensions or weapons, flow through tight spaces, or flatten to avoid strikes. She was impervious to most physical harm, as her body could absorb blunt force or piercing attacks with little effect. Additionally, she could envelop objects or people with her liquid form and extend parts of herself to strike at range. Her biology also granted her survival against experiments and injuries that would have been lethal to humans, though she remained psychologically scarred by such ordeals. (New X-Men v2 #23)
