Dave Clark
In mid-1941, he gained a post as a humble spot announcer for station UXAM. On his way home one evening, a building collapsed and Dave rushed to aid in the recovery effort. He noticed that the building materials were shoddy, and wasted no time taking up the matter with the building’s owner, Carleton. Clark became the masked Midnight, a hero who collected money from the corrupt, and distributed it to the victims of the collapse. He failed to ensnare Carleton, and was captured, then lashed to a crumbling dam. Clark was anticipating his end when the dam cracked, freeing him. He managed to warn the town below, but much damage was done. Midnight returned to Carleton’s house to trounce him and his gang, then secured ten million dollars for the relief. (Smash Comics v1 #18)
Midnight encounters the intelligent talking monkey Gabby. By the end of the story, the death of the scientist responsible leaves Gabby in Midnight's care, and the monkey becomes Midnight's sidekick. (Smash Comics v1 #21) Later on, Midnight and Gabby face off against mad scientist Doc Wackey who, once captured, is talked into reforming and joins forces with Midnight. Doc Wackey and Gabby would continue to serve as Midnight's sidekicks. (Smash Comics v1 #23)

David Clark originally moved from his Midwestern home to New York City in the late 1930s. There, he became a radio announcer at station WXAM. When Clark learned that a building he had seen collapsed had originally been erected by a criminally negligent construction group, he adopted the Midnight identity, a character he had first heard of in a radio drama entitled The Man Called Midnight, to force the construction company's owner to admit his culpability. (Secret Origins v2 #28)
During World War II, Midnight subsequently became a member of the Freedom Fighters, a splinter group of the All-Star Squadron. (Young All-Stars v1 #27)
