Ming the Merciless is a villain who features in Flash Gordon.

Biography

Ming the Merciless was a sinister male dictator who came to rule the planet of Mongo.

When Flash Gordon and his friend arrived on Mongo, they came to find it was ruled by the evil tyrant Emperor Ming whose forces captured them. He immediately took a liking to Dale Arden who he intended to marry and had Gordon enslaved.

He came to have a daughter who was Princess Aura though she was beholden to his commands.

He was shown to possess an incredible intellect that he used to achieve his evil goals.

  • Ming the Merciless was created by Alex Raymond where he made his first appearance in Flash Gordon (January 21st, 1934) by King Features Syndicate.

Television

  • In The New Adventures of Flash Gordon, Ming the Merciless appeared in the 1979 animated television series where he was voiced by actor Vic Perrin in the pilot with actor Alan Oppenheimer voicing him in the rest of the series.
  • In Defenders of the Earth, Ming the Merciless appeared in the 1980s animated television series where he was voiced by actor Ron Feinberg. He was shown to have had a son by the name of Prince Krotan who was a cowardly duplicitous royal that wanted to take his fathers throne. The frozen world of Mongo was ruled by him where he was advised by the mobile battle computer Octon and served by Garax who commanded the armies of Ice Robots that maintained his reign on the planet.
  • In Flash Gordon, Ming the Merciless appeared in the 2007 live-action Sci-Fi Channel television series where he was portrayed by actor John Ralston.
