Mister Fear (Zoltan Drago)

Main Article: Zoltan Drago

Zoltan Drago was a male human who by adulthood came to be a talented sculptor who opened a wax museum. He carved lifelike figurines of the world's heroes and villains, but he received little business. He spent all of his spare time trying to mix chemicals that would turn his statues to life. (Daredevil v1 #6) It was said that the Dweller-in-Darkness influenced the dreams of Zoltan Drago. (Doctor Strange v3 #33) One day, he was working one day when his cat knocked over some chemicals. When Drago inhaled them, he grew incredibly frightened. Thrilled with this discovery, he turned the gas into bullets he could fire from a gun, then designed a costume as Mister Fear. He looked over his statues for potential henchmen to recruit and selected Ox and Eel. Using his gas, he manipulated criminals into revealing the Eel's location, then used his gas to convince the Eel to join them. As the Ox was released from prison, Drago and Eel picked him up and recruited him as well. Fear hired a movie crew to record Ox and Eel, who he called his Fellowship of Fear, robbing a store, surmising that the public would think it legal with the camera crew present. The costumed hero Daredevil attacked the duo and successfully fought them off until Fear arrived and shot a pellet, scaring Daredevil off. Drago created a wax statue of Daredevil and advertised it, assuming Daredevil would come to investigate it and they could get their revenge. Vast crowds came to see the new statue while the Fellowship watched silently. That night, Daredevil entered, only to be attacked by the Fellowship. While Fear fired a gas pellet, Foggy Nelson, a patron from earlier who was returning to get his hat, entered and knocked Fear's shot off-balance and then lunged and ripped free Fear's mask. Fearing that Nelson was a cop, Drago ordered Ox to take care of him. Ox knocked Nelson down, then Fear ordered the Fellowship to abandon the building, fearing more cops would soon be arriving. The Fellowship posed as doctors and went to Nelson's room later to silence him. When they entered, they ordered Karen Page to leave. Daredevil burst through the window and evaded Ox's punches; Fear and Eel didn't have their uniforms. Daredevil turned off the lights and knocked the criminals around until they fled. Fear grew frustrated later when Ox and Eel began to question his leadership and he promised to prove their worth with their next heist. Daredevil suddenly revealed he'd been posing as a wax statue in the museum and knocked Ox and Eel down, then he stood by an exhaust fan that sucked up the fumes of Fear's gun. Daredevil then turned the fan backwards, hitting Ox and Eel with the fumes. Ox and Eel ran, knocking the gun from Fear's hand, though Fear was not affected by the gas as his face was protected by his mask. Daredevil kicked the gun away and turned the villains' attacks against each other. He separated Ox from the others and wore him down, then turned back to Fear, who begged for Daredevil to not hurt him. With all three villains defeated, Daredevil left them tied up for the police. Mister Fear (Starr Saxon)

Main Article: Starr Saxon

Starr Saxon came to be the second person to claim the identity of Mister Fear. He forced Zoltan Drago to tell him where his equipment and costume were hidden and then shot him and assumed his identity. Claiming to be a reformed Drago, he offered thousands of dollars to charity if Daredevil would respond to his public challenge. Daredevil obliged, but Saxon's improved technology took him by surprise, and Saxon dealt him a demoralizing public defeat. (Daredevil v1 #54) Caught up in his own charade, the thrill-seeking Saxon, still as Mister Fear, embarked on a crime spree, but was soon confronted by a newly determined Daredevil, who, atop Saxon's flying platform, unmasked his enemy in a struggle that ended with Saxon's fall to his death. (Daredevil v1 #55)

He would later leave the Mister Fear identity to be stolen by others after him. (Daredevil v1 #91)

Mister Fear (Larry Cranston)

Main Article: Larry Cranston

Larry Cranston attended the same Law School as Matt Murdock. He hated what Murdock was always praised at the School, and even defeated Larry in a mock trial. Cranston was a witness of Mister Fear Zoltan Drago's murder. Drago asked him for help and revealed the location of his hidden caches. Unfortunately, Cranston was unable to help him as Drago died moments later. Obtaining Mister Fear's equipment, Cranston decided to take vengeance on Murdock. He noticed what both Murdock and Daredevil moved to San Francisco and suspected what they were the same person. He convinced his partners at their law firm Broderick, Sloan and Cranston to hire Murdock and then attacked him with Fear Gas. Unfortunately he was defeated and unmasked by Daredevil. Trying to escape, Larry leapt from the building, forgetting his jets and seemingly falling to his death. (Daredevil v1 #91)

Mister Fear (Alan Fagan)

Main Article: Alan Fagan

Alan Fagan used 'Cora' Tremmore for a good time and then left her behind, refusing to accept responsibility for her care, or for the care of their daughter, Ariel, born soon after. Ariel's mother trained her from an early age to hate her father and to be better than him. (Daredevil v1 #315) Fagan was thrown out of various schools, and he squandered his father's fortune. After the apparent death of Mister Fear Larry Cranston, his equipment fell into the hands of his nephew, Alan Fagan. Fagan plotted to build a nuclear bomb to bring New York City to its knees. Mister Fear led his henchmen to bomb an armored car from Cross Technological Enterprises (CTE), which carried a radioactive isotope. CTE's security chief, Hawkeye, confronted them, but exposure to the fear gas caused him to flee, and Mister Fear and his men escaped with the cargo. However, Hawkeye had had the foresight to place a tracer within the cargo. Musing over his plans, Fagan discovered and destroyed Hawkeye's tracer just as Hawkeye, joined by Spider-Man, approached his building. Nonetheless, Spider-Man scaled the apartment building and happened across Fagan's open window. Fagan sent his men against Spider-Man, to no avail, but when Spider-Man confronted Mister Fear, he challenged Spider-Man's courage, accusing him of hiding behind his webbing. Spider-Man allowed Mister Fear to take his best shot at him, and Fagan punched him in the face. Though the force of the blow did almost nothing, it allowed Mister Fear to inject Spider-Man with a concentrated fear chemical from his ring, and soon Spider-Man was at his mercy. Mister Fear planned to inject Spider-Man repeatedly to cause him to die of fear, but Hawkeye arrived to distract him. An arrow shattered Mister Fear's ring, and Hawkeye finished off Fear's men. Escaping the room, Mister Fear pumped it full of fear gas, but Hawkeye held his breath. Still cutaneous absorption was beginning to affect them, and Mister Fear was able to punch Hawkeye over the balcony. Hawkeye saved himself with a flare arrow's rocket, but his apparent death allowed Spider-Man to rally his wits and go after Mister Fear. With Hawkeye's return, Mister Fear was quickly defeated, and he was taken away by the police. Hawkeye told the cops to check Mister Fear's apartment for loot from other robberies. (Marvel Team-Up v1 #92)

Overview

Fear Gas was accidently invented by Zoltan Drago based on pheromones, chemicals produced by most animals, used to communicate a variety of simple messages over distances. The particular pheromone he used is the flight-scent pheromone, which stimulates fear reactions in herd animals. He tailored it for human beings, dubbed himself Mister Fear and became criminal. (Daredevil v1 #6)
