Biography
Origin
Absolon Zebardyn Mercator was a male human Mutant where he was was born in a small village near the town of Ghent in Belgium. His power to alter molecular structures first developed when he was a child. He became a local healer, using his abilities at the behest of his parents to cure the sick. While the townspeople debated whether his power was a curse or from the divine, Absolon merely did as he was asked. One day, however, Absolon lashed out with his power to protect his cousin from a bully, and turned the bigger boy Rubin literally inside out. Absolon could not reverse the change no matter how he tried, and the boy suffered in agony for three days before finally passing on. Absolon’s parents sent him out of Belgium to live with family in America, where he remained for the next thirty years. (District X v1 #4) In this time, Absolon's only known close friend was Hanna Levy who was a Mutant that ate insects. (District X v1 #2) His experience as a child terrified Absolon, so he spent decades trying to avoid getting involved with others, and using his powers for only the simplest of acts. He made a life for himself in the low-rent area of District X, the neighborhood in New York City that became popular for mutants and mutant culture. Mercator operated as a simple repairman, making just enough money to get by while spending his free time holed up in his apartment reading books or visiting the local bars. The closest thing he had to a friend was Hanna Levy, another mutant who lived in his apartment building. Hanna occasionally baked for him after he fixed her broken appliances. Circumstances finally pushed Mr. Mercator to take action when he witnessed a double murder from his window. In the apartment across the street, a mutant siren used her voice to compel a police officer named Gus Kucharsky to shoot her and her possessive husband before he turned his gun on himself, creasing his skull. Kucharsky’s partner, Ismael Ortega, covered up the shooting in an effort to divert blame to the husband and save his partner. Mr. M debated whether he should come forward with what he saw. Mercator visited Kucharsky in the hospital to determine whether he was worth saving. (District X v1 #3)
Ruminating over the situation at the local club, Dante’s Inferno, Absolon saw a drug dealer named Jazz chasing a customer who ripped him off. He used his powers to cut off Jazz and stop him from stabbing the user. Afterwards, apparently on a whim, Mr. M followed Jazz to his boss, Shaky Kaufman, and from there to the Toad Boy, a young mutant whose excretions were being used to create a powerful psychedelic drug called Toad Juice. Mercator decided to rescue Tarquin the Toad Boy and his mother from Kaufman Enterprises. He used his abilities to reverse Tarquin’s mutation, making him normal. Unfortunately, Tarquin’s mother was addicted to the Toad Juice and caused a scene, bringing Kaufman’s enforcers out to stop them. Faced with violence, Absolon reacted and crushed the heart of one of Kaufman’s men, killing him. (District X v1 #4) While still reeling from what he had done, Mr. M ran into Ismael Ortega and his new partner Lucas Bishop of the X.S.E. on the streets. Bishop wanted to bring Mercator in for the murder of Kaufman’s enforcer and the situation quickly turned explosive. Mercator easily dropped both officers, but also recognized Ortega as Kucharsky’s partner. He found Ortega’s address and went to speak to him at home the next day, hoping to explain himself under calmer circumstances. Outside the apartment, however, Mercator saw Ortega’s son Esteban playing with his father’s gun. He rushed upstairs to stop the boy but by the time he made it, Esteban had accidentally pulled the trigger and shot his sister, Chamayra. (District X v1 #5)
(District X#6) - Mercator successfully saved Chamayra's life, pulling the bullet from her stomach and healing the wound. However, her mom misconstrued the situation, as did Ismael when he came in. Without Esteban to tell the truth, the Ortegas thought Mercator had abused their daughter, forcing him to flee. Already frantic and desperate, Absolon was pushed over the edge when he encountered a precognitive street artist who had etched him on the sidewalk as a destroyer. Now considering himself an engine of destruction, Mercator decided to destroy all of District X. He went home and told his neighbor Hanna to get out, even showing her his tentacled head he always kept hidden under his hat. He allowed Hanna thirty minutes to get to safety before he unleashed his full powers. As she was rushing out, Hanna ran into Bishop, Ismael Ortega and the NYPD. She told them what Mercator was planning, which prompted Bishop to improvise. Calling on the services of the mutant illusion casting call girl Lara, Bishop had Absolon believe he had actually destroyed District X. In reality, Bishop had absorbed all of Mercator's built up destructive force, which he released as harmless fireworks over the city. Absolon then surrendered to the authorities and went along peacefully. When Esteban confessed what had really happened with Chamayra, Ismael visited Mercator in his cell in the 11th precinct to apologize and thank him. He gave Mr. M a photograph of a smiling, happy Chamayra as a reminder of the good he had done. (District X v1 #6) Thanks to detectives Bishop and Ortega putting in a good word for him, Absolon Mercator saw the District Attorney drop all charges against him. Alexi Vazhin, head of Russia's Department of Mutant Affairs, received a report on Mr. M. Concerned about his powers, Vazhin hired a covert assassin to take him out. Mr. M picked up a gorgeous blonde woman at Daniel's Inferno, unaware she was Sashenka Popova the covert assassin hired by Alexi Vazhin. Going for a drive, the mystery woman took him to the East River where the date turned into murder when she shot the inebriated Absolon in the head, disgusted by the idea he wanted to "put his filthy mutant hands" on her. She then shot him two more times before driving off, while Mr. M slowly realized what was happening as the life drained from him. (District X v1 #7) Mr. M was found and rushed to the hospital where it quickly became clear he would miraculously survive. For some reason, all three bullets stopped the moment they entered his brain, only to be spontaneously expelled within hours. After that, the wounds healed almost instantly. Doctors figured he might suffer from mild, sporadic aphasia but other than that he should be fine. When Mr. M came to, he found his neighbor Hanna Levy by his bedside. Bishop traced the hit back to Colonel Vazhin and went to see him. Furious that Vazhin had used his intelligence report to condemn an innocent man to death, Bishop threatened to expose all of Vazhin's operations unless he left Mr. M alone. The colonel begrudgingly agreed. (District X v1 #8)
Mutant Town
After the events of M-Day, Mr. M was one of the few individuals unaffected. He visited his hospitalized friend Hanna, who was growing insane due to all of the bugs that had begun to attack her when she lost her mutant power, and helped to heal her mind. At her suggestion, he decides to head to the Xavier Institute on foot. (X-Men: The 198 v1 #1)
Absolon decided to have the The 198 leave the mansion despite the X-Men and O*N*E's attempts to stop them. The face in Johnny Dee's chest quietly declared him a threat that had to be eliminated. Mr. M led his followers to an island which they reached by walking across the water. When the X Men showed up to try and talk them into returning, Cyclops was promptly attacked by a mind-controlled Erg and when he retaliated Mr. M declared he would protect his followers. However, Johnny Dee, under the command of General Lazer, used his voodoo dolls to make Leech depower Absolon and then used Magma to annihilate Mr. M. (X-Men: The 198 v1 #4) On that night, as Lorelei and Leech watched over Absolon's coffin, they fell asleep. The pair woke to an empty casket. Later, Lorelei and Leech, surrounded by butterflies, told the 198 about their experience: "I can't tell you what we saw. I don't have the words". Absolon never appeared to anyone else, but Absolon did not want them to grieve for him, so Absolon sent them a message. 'Some things do not die... THEY EVOLVE!'" (X-Men: The 198 v1 #5)
House of X
During Hellfire Gala, Magneto gathered several omega level mutants in order to terraform Mars. Magneto visited Absolon to ask him to join and help with the process, but Absolon refused to participate. (Planet-Size X-Men v1 #1)
