Biography

Origin

Nathaniel Adams

Armageddon 2001

Monarch was an oppressive tyrant from a bleak, dystopian Earth fifty years in the future. The people were unhappy with his rule, particularly a scientist named Matthew Ryder, an expert on temporal studies, who was convinced he could use his technology to travel back in time and prevent the maniacal ruler from ever coming to power. He learned that forty years ago, one of Earth's heroes would eventually turn evil and become Monarch, and ten years from that would conquer the world. During a time travel experiment, Matthew was transformed into Waverider, and began searching the timestream for the hero who would become Monarch, little knowing that Monarch was following him. (Armageddon 2001 v1 #1) When Monarch came into battle with the heroes of the present day, he killed Dove, and her enraged partner killed him for it. Removing the villains mask, Hank discovered that HE was Monarch, and donned the armor. (Armageddon 2001 v1 #2)

Countdown

He appeared on New Earth to approach the exiled Forerunner where he offered her purpose and a chance at revenge against her former masters. (Countdown v1 #44) Monarch took her into the Bleed where he revealed he wanted her to train his armies. During this time, he revealed that the Monitors had exterminated her people with Forerunner swearing revenge against the Monitors and vowing to avenge her race. (Countdown v1 #43) He next appeared on the reborn Earth-3 where he recruited the Crime Society into his army. (Countdown v1 #31) Afterwards, he continued his voyages through the Multiverse alongside Forerunner as they arrived on Earth-8. This saw him recruit Lord Havok and the Extremists into his Multiversal army. (Countdown v1 #29) He made a similar offer to Donna Troy, Jason Todd and Kyle Rayner with them refusing with even Lord Havok turning on him as the villain refused to serve anyone. This led to a three way battle with the Crime Society entering into the fray where they sided with Monarch in defeating his enemies. (Countdown v1 #28)
