Biography

The Muse was a mysterious man with an unknown past who considered himself as an artist possessing dark impulses. He came to express his art by using human flesh and gore to create his masterpieces. According to him, his first work involved an innocent woman that he turned into a piece of art where at first he questioned if he should stopped but resolved to keep going forward on this path. Establishing an attic studio, he kept the remnants of his victims to be used in his work. (Daredevil v5 #14)

At some point, he came to spy on the vigilante Blindspot who had established a shrine to heroes in Chinatown with the artist admiring the hero's work. (Daredevil v5 #14) He would later target Tenfingers who was the leader of the Church of the Sheltering Hands where he hung the man on the wall and severed his limbs. (Daredevil v5 #5) Afterwards, he used the blood of 113 victims in order to paint a giant war mural. (Daredevil v5 #10) One of his masterpieces was a piece he called Sanguinity where he left his victims hanging from the ceiling in his basement with many of them still being alive. (Daredevil v5 #14) Using a card, he would invite Blindspot for a battle at the basement causing the vigilante to uncover the end result of Muse's work. (Daredevil v5 #10) For weeks, the work of the artist attracted the attention of the media who referred to the new serial killer as Vincent Van Gore with the police conducting an investigation on the victims. Meanwhile, the owners of the building that contained the blood mural began to sell tickets to the public to showcase it. (Daredevil v5 #11)

Around the city, he had been targeting newly created Inhumans where he killed them and use their corpses as statues as works of art. (Daredevil v5 #12)

A.D.A. Matt Murdock, who was one of the people that discovered Muse's second artwork, sensed Muse's presence in the distance, witnessing as people unveiled his new work for the first time, and left the scene to change to his Daredevil suit and confront the villain. (Daredevil v5 #11)

During his first public appearance, Muse attacked a courtroom and kidnapped Judge Laird, who had been presented by Councilwoman Andrea Pearson with the case to shut down public access to the location of his blood mural. (Daredevil v5 #12) Muse took the judge to the sewers, where he had also abducted Pearson and two police officers, and planned to use all of them for a new work. Blindspot, who had witnessed the judge's kidnapping, followed Muse and caught his attention. Muse chased Blindspot deeper into the sewers, but the vigilante used his suit's camouflaging to disconcert Muse and return to the victims to tie them off and escort them to safety. Blidspot tried to lead Muse away again, but his suit ran out of batteries, and Muse captured him. (Daredevil v5 #13) Muse took Blindspot to his garret and while he was deciding what to do with him, Daredevil arrived, having tracked them down with his senses. Muse gouged Blindspot's eyes out and then escaped. On his way out, he passed by a room where all of the missing people used in his mural were hanging from the ceiling being drained of their blood, and still alive. He cut the ropes hanging them to distract Daredevil and save time, but he was stopped on the rooftop by Inhuman authorities, who had been assisting Daredevil in investigating Muse due to the crimes on Inhumans. Daredevil caught up with him once Muse had been cuffed, fueled by rage for Blindspot's injury. Having noticed Daredevil's intentions, Muse broke his own fingers, stating that's what Daredevil would've wanted, for him to be unable to create more works of 'art'. After Daredevil took off Muse's mask, the villain was taken away. (Daredevil v5 #14)

Muse became inspired by Daredevil's continued fight for justice in spite of the persecution leading to the serial killer deciding to escape. (Daredevil v1 #600) He went on to vandalize numerous landmarks of Manhattan with giant-sized irremovable graffitis that featured different vigilantes showing support for them. A group of police officers intercepted Muse when he was finishing a mural of the Punisher. Muse slaughtered them and adorned the graffiti with their bodies. (Daredevil v1 #598)

Having regained his sight due to the intervention of The Hand, Blindspot decided to confront Muse on his own. He defaced one of Muse's murals to lure the murderous artist, and they fought. (Daredevil v1 #599) When Muse overpowered Blindspot, he was briefly taken over by the power of The Hand's Beast, and defeated Muse. However, he refused to kill him. In response, Muse walked into a burning pile of debris complaining that it was supposed to be his own story and not Blindspot's. He succumbed to the fire, using his final words to lament because he had "so much beauty left." (Daredevil v1 #600)

Overview

Personality and attributes

As a serial killer, the newspapers began to refer to him as Vincent Van Gore though he did not like the name as he found it undistinguished. He himself had been toying with the name Muse though admitted that could change as re-invention was the key to a long career. (Daredevil v5 #12)

It was claimed that Muse did not see himself as a villain but simply a person creating art. (Daredevil v5 #11) He claimed that he did not murder the people he killed as they wanted to die and he simply offered them a gift by turning them into works of art. Muse had said that as an artist that he operated under a strict code with him never explaining or apologising for his work. (Daredevil v5 #12)

Powers and abilities

He had an unspecified level of abilities as he was shown to be fast enough to grab a baton thrown at him and break it in half with his bare hands. (Daredevil v5 #12)

It was said that scents and sounds were seemingly drawn to him making him a black hole of sensory information. (Daredevil v5 #12)
