Biography

Apprentice to Matt Murdock in Daredevil v5 #1.

Samuel Chung was a male human born on Earth in China to his mother Lu Wei who was a rural farmer. When Sam was still young, he and his mother moved to the city. Sam was enrolled in an acrobatic school, and became an excellent gymnast. A few years later, Lu sought help from a people-smuggler to illegally enter the United States of America. Later on, Lu had another child named Hannah, who was a legal citizen unlike Sam. (Daredevil v5 #27) Since he was 12 years old, he came upon the idea of creating a suit that could bend light and make the user invisible. Upon arriving in the United States, he along with his family came to settle in the area of Chinatown. (All-New, All-Different Marvel Point One v1 #1) Having grown into adulthood, Sam worked fourteen hours as a janitor at Columbia University to pay rent and sustain him and his sister after their mother left them behind to join the Church of the Sheltering Hands. (Daredevil v5 #26) As an illegal immigrant, he had to work low jobs in order to afford rent at the small apartment used by himself and his sister. Among these jobs was janitorial duties at Columbia University where he used some of his time to read up on material there and gain access to equipment. By auditing classes for professors, he came to use the equipment in the labs to fashion a costume that could bend light and become invisible. Due to limited resources, he could only power it with batteries that burnt out after a while which meant he could not use the suit for extended periods. Once crafted, he wanted to become a vigilante and help people but lacked the experience in operating as a hero. Thus, he sought a mentor and staked out for one during the nights where he came upon Daredevil fighting some ninjas. Despite being invisible, Daredevil sensed him causing Sam to lose stagger and nearly fall off the rooftop but the Man Without Fear came to save him. (All-New, All-Different Marvel Point One v1 #1)

The life of Sam and his mother, Liu Wei, changed drastically with the appearance of crime lord Tenfingers, who lured Liu to become a member of his Church of the Sheltering Hands. Lu Wei vouched for Sam to become a member as well, and the Church extended him an invitation. Sam accepted, and began to work for the temple solely in order to investigate their nefarious secret activities, with the intention of helping Daredevil take them down. After discovering the connection between Tenfingers and the dangerous cult of ninja known as the Hand. (Daredevil v5 #2)

Sam finished his Blindspot suit and began training with Daredevil every night. Daredevil was rough on Blindspot, pushing him to his limits. Sam's mother became a member of the Eights, a specialized warrior group of the Church of the Sheltering Hands. She had eight fingers total on each hand after fingers were grafted on. As a personal guard to Tenfingers, the leader of the church who had ten fingers on each hand, she vouched for Sam Chung, advocating for him to be a trusted member of the church. Finding out how corrupt the Church was, Blindspot opened up to Daredevil about it all, encouraging the hero to shut it down. Daredevil instead encouraged Blindspot instead to reach out to attorney Matt Murdock to take legal action against the church. Blindspot directed church member Billy Li to Matt to testify against the church. Blindspot also started a social media account for himself as a hero and acquired many followers. (Daredevil v5 #2) Blindspot began training with Daredevil regularly as he grew accustomed to using his invisibility suit in combat and perfecting his fighting skills. Sam Chung infiltrated the Church of the Sheltering Hands, getting a regular audience with Tenfingers. Daredevil saved Church member Billy Li from being killed, and Blindspot, after stopping to buy more batteries for his suit, joined Daredevil in the fight. Daredevil told Blindspot to be there to train at 2 AM, telling Blindspot his training would be over when he could best Daredevil in combat. Later, Sam returned to the Church, where Tenfingers ordered Onehand, Nonefingers, and Sam Chung to kill Li and his lawyer, Matt Murdock, in the courtroom the next day. (Daredevil v5 #1)

With Nonefingers and others watching him, Sam went to the courthouse, where he was expected to kill Li and Murdock. Blindspot snuck into the room where Li was being held and he severed fingers from Li's hands, then he fled, leaving Li alive, knowing he wouldn't talk. Back at the Church, Tenfingers was incredibly disappointed that Sam had disobeyed his orders, even though Sam claimed he was only trying to protect the church. Sam's mother vouched for him, then Tenfingers gave him another chance. That night, Blindspot sparred with Daredevil, who knocked off the suit's invisibility component as he pressured Blindspot to get better at defending himself without relying on gimmicks. Later, Blindspot remained invisible while Daredevil went to the church, but just then members of the Hand attacked. (Daredevil v5 #2) Blindspot helped Daredevil fight the Hand, as the Eights protected Tenfingers. The Hand soon fled. On their own, Daredevil explained to Blindspot how dangerous the Hand was, and how everyone in the church was in danger, and Blindspot revealed that he'd been wounded in the battle. Unable to afford healthcare, Blindspot was referred by Daredevil to the Night Nurse for treatment, and he told Blindspot he'd graduated combat training. (Daredevil v5 #3)

Sam confronted his mother to convince her to leave the Church for her safety, revealing his secret identity to her in the process. (Daredevil v5 #4) The Hand then deployed an undead warrior known as the Fist who attacked the Temple of the Sheltering Hands. In response, Tenfingers ordered his lieutenants, including Lu Wei, to kill any witnesses. Blindspot confronted Tenfinger's men and his own mother to protect the innocent followers of the temple. Wei ultimately decided to turn on her teammates and kill them to let Sam and the innocents escape. However, she warned Sam that he should consider her dead to him. (Daredevil v5 #5)

Sam's right arm was broken when a meeting between Daredevil and Elektra went awry, as she had been brainwashed to believe her non-existent daughter had gone missing. (Daredevil v5 #6) Because he had to take days off from work due to his injury, Daredevil offered Sam to work as an assistant for his civilian identity of lawyer Matt Murdock. (Daredevil v5 #7) Even after his arm was healed, Sam continued working for Murdock. Once he got back in the game as Blindspot, Sam was lured to a warehouse where he discovered a mural made of human blood. (Daredevil v5 #10) The turned out to be first of many works of 'art' created by the twisted serial killer known as the Muse. (Daredevil v5 #11) As Blindspot, Sam pursued Muse when he attacked a courthouse and kidnapped a judge and took him to the sewers together with a councilwoman and two police officers. (Daredevil v5 #13) Even though he managed to get Muse's victims to safety, Sam was kidnapped and taken to Muse's garret. Daredevil managed to track both of them with his senses. Unfortunately, as soon as he arrived to rescue Sam, Muse gouged his eyes out and then escaped. (Daredevil v5 #14) Following Muse's capture, Sam was taken to St. Luke's Presbyterian Hospital, where he remained sedated. (Daredevil v5 #15)
