History

Nanotechnology Island was a small landmass present on Earth in the early 21st century. It came as a result of the National Nanotechnology Initiative desiring further research into the field of nanotechnology. Thus, in 2001, the United States government established a research facility that sought to develop nanotechnology for global implementation. After 20 years of study, scientists managed to reach levels of advancement that were unimagined decades earlier. However, by this point, a malfunction occurred in the central computer leading to the nanomachines engaging in constant self-replication mode. Thus, those injected with nanotechnology had the machines burst out of their bodies to form Orgamechs that began to attack the populace on the island.

Overview

The island was developed as a large research laboratory to study the capabilities of nanomachines. This saw the development of examples of such technology from research versions to ID nanos that were injected for identification purposes. Control over the nanomachines was achieved through a main computer situated on the island where a malfunction could affect their use. The nanotechnology operated by being injected into host bodies where they self-replicated by mining the iron within the blood to maintain a suitable number of nanomachines.

Notes

  • An interview with Koji Igarashi also refers to the island as Nano Island.
