Original Timeline

Shinnok's Spire.

Netherrealm was an other dimensional hellish realm that was long ago created following the emergence of creation. Ages ago as part of its history, the Elder Gods made sorcerers toil for them by linking the realms through portals connecting to the Nexus. However, the lower planes of the Netherrealm were hazardous to magic users and magical beings. Thus, to continue to work, the sorcerers established Soul Stones which were obelisks that channeled magic thus replenishing users with their power. Eons ago, the Elder God Shinnok of Earthrealm turned against his kin where he sought dominion over all of existence. He was opposed by the thunder god Raiden who defeated Shinnok with the fallen deity imprisoned in the Netherrealm.

At some point, the Brotherhood of Shadow was established where they served Quan Chi where they set about planning to free their master Shinnok.

Reboot Timeline

During the Armageddon, Shao Kahn proved to be the victor of the conflict with all of reality being destroyed as a result. In his final moments, Raiden sent his memories back to his past self during the time of the Mortal Kombat Tournament. These memories appeared as scattered visions of the future for Raiden who sought to use them to avert this future thus creating a new timeline of events.

With Shinnok defeated, the Revenant Liu Kang and Kitana became the new rulers of the Netherrealm where they retained a hostile relationship with Earthrealm.

Overview

It was said to be the darkest region of reality that was inhabited by beings of the purest evil. Among the realms, the Netherrealm was one of the few that was infinite in size. The lower planes of the realm drained magical power and thus sorcerers were powerless in these areas. As such, it contained a number of obelisks known as Soul Stones that replenished those of magical power.

A number of places in this realm included:

  • Nekros : the capital city of the realm.
  • Slaughterhouse : an arena that was located in the capital.
  • Netherrealm Cliffs : this mountain stood over a sea of lava and had numerous meteors impact its surface.
  • Krossroads : a barren landscape with a river of lava nearby the region.
  • Prison of Souls : this was a prison guarded by the Keepers where the lost and the damned were imprisoned.
  • Sea of Immortality : this was a sea located near the Prison of Souls.
  • Shinnok's Spire : this was a large tower where the fallen Elder God Shinnok resided and had his throne where he ruled over the realm.
  • Pyramid of Shinnok :
  • Bone Temple :
An Oni.

It was said that one cannot enter the Netherrealm without having a taint of evil in their heart and that continued existence within the realm begins to corrupt travelers.

A number of races inhabited Netherrealm that included:

  • Undead :
  • Oni :
  • Demons :
  • Wraiths :

Inhabitants of the Netherrealm engaged in their own traditions such as the Festival of Torture where they burnt the dead bodies and watched the event.

Inhabitants

  • Shinnok : a male Elder God and son of Kronika who attempted to usurp power over the realms causing him to be banished to the Netherrealm for his crimes and deprived of much of his strength.
  • Quan Chi :
  • Drahmin :
  • Moloch :
  • Sareena :
  • Scorpion : formerly a male human named Hanzo Hasashi of the Shirai Ryu until he was murdered by Sub-Zero the elder where the sorcerer Quan Chi revived him as an undead spectre called Scorpion.
  • Noob Saibot : Bi-Han was a male human who was formerly the Lin Kuei warrior Sub-Zero until he was killed by Scorpion whereupon he was resurrected as an undead warrior called Noob Saibot where he served in the Brotherhood of Shadows.
