History

The Nexus was a space-time anomaly that journeyed through the galaxy and moved through space as a ribbon of energy that could pass through vessels or worlds. It travelled to known space every 39.1 years where it followed a series of coordinates through space.

Starfleet first came to encounter the Nexus in 2293, when the newly-christened U.S.S. Enterprise-B responded to a distress call from two vessels transporting El-Aurian refugees to Earth. Arriving at the vessels' location, the Enterprise found them trapped in a powerful gravimetric field emanating from the trailing edge of the energy ribbon. The Enterprise arrived too late to save the SS Robert Fox where it moved into transporter range in an attempt to beam aboard the crew and passengers from the surviving the ship the SS Lakul. The crew experienced difficulty in maintaining a transporter lock on them, however, as their life signs were experiencing a state of temporal flux, phasing in and out of the spacetime continuum. As the Lakul began to lose structural integrity, the transporter was initiated, but the crew was only able to save 47 people out of 150, including El-Aurians Guinan and Tolian Soran. Afterward, the Enterprise itself became caught in the gravimetric field, and was unable to escape. Montgomery Scott who was attended the maiden voyage of the vessel along with Captain James T. Kirk and Commander Pavel Chekov, realized that a resonance burst fired from the main deflector might disrupt the field long enough for the ship to break free. Although this was successful, Captain Kirk himself was pulled into the Nexus when an energy discharge from the ribbon impacted the section of the ship where Kirk was modifying the deflector relays. For the next 78 years, it was believed that Kirk had died a hero.

Overview

In appearance, within normal space it resembled a large energy ribbon that moved through space. It was actually a confluence of temporal energy that manifested as an anomaly in space that was affected by gravitational forces. Time was said to hold no meaning within the Nexus.

It was actually a doorway to another place that was also referred to as the Nexus. Within this realm, it was described as being a realm of joy, contentment and complete happiness. Inside it, individuals did not care about anything else beyond staying within the Nexus and not holding any desire to return to the corporeal world. People that briefly experienced the Nexus became obsessed with returning to that realm.
