Biography

Nezuko Kamado (Japanese: 竈門 禰豆子, Hepburn: Kamado Nezuko) was a female human born centuries ago in the lands of Japan as the daughter of Tanjuro Kamado and Kie Kamado. She was the second eldest child with her having an older brother named Tanjiro Kamado and four younger siblings named Takeo Kamado, Hanako Kamado, Shigeru Kamado and Rokuta Kamado.

One day, her brother was away from their home when in the night a demon attacked and killed almost her entire family. Nezuko came to be the only survivor where she was turned into a demon by the orchestrator of said attack with this being the demon Muzan Kibutsuji. She was left behind in the ruins of her home where she succumbed to her demonic state and acted in a wild manner. It was in this state that her brother Tanjiro found her in when he finally managed to return home. At first, she would attack her brother who desperately wanted to save his sister. By this point, one of the Demon Slayer Corps had arrived at the scene with Giyu Tomioka looking to perform his duty in killing the demon. However, Tanjiro interfered where he tried to defend his sister and vowed to protect her despite her being a demon. This led to the Hashira having to deal with him where he was knocked unconscious. It was then that Nezuko moved in after coming to her senses where she swiftly tried to defend her brother from Tomioka. The Demon Slayer came to moved by the familial bond between the brother and sister in protecting one another leading to him deciding to spare Nezuko.

Following her awakening after their short fight and her brother receiving instructions from Giyu to find a man named Sakonji Urokodaki, Nezuko is taken by Tanjiro to first bury and pay their respects to their deceased family. She then hides in a nearby cave, since the sun has risen, and waits for her brother to find something to carry her in so they can travel by day. The two begin to travel towards Sakonji's home, but run into a Demon, who has just killed and is preying on a family, on their way. Tanjiro attacks the Demon, hitting it in the jaw with his axe, but it swiftly heals the wound and boasts about its regeneration abilities. Angered, the Demon pounces on Tanjiro, but Nezuko swiftly kicks its head off, also kicking its body away as it continues to attack. The pair manage to fend off the Demon, pinning its head to a tree and throwing its body off a mountain, until Sakonji suddenly appears and informs them that they cannot kill a Demon through these methods. Tanjiro hesitates to deliver the final blow, and, eventually, the sun rises, causing the Demon to disintegrate and Nezuko to flee to the safety of the house. After a short lecture and test of strength, the siblings are taken in by Sakonji, who then begins training Tanjiro in the Water Breathing Breathing Style. Nezuko then sleeps for the full two years Tanjiro spends training, not even awakening after he leaves for the Final Selection. Sakonji keeps her in check the entire time, until Tanjiro successfully passes the Final Selection, because it is only then, when he returns to them, that Nezuko awakens. She greets Tanjiro, embracing him and relieving him of his fears. It is during this time we learn that Sakonji used suggestive hypnosis on Nezuko while she was asleep to reinforce a simple mindset; that all humans were members of her 'family' and therefore she should protect them, and also to kill all demons.

During their travels, they ended up at Asakusa where Tanjiro's sense of smell led him to finding the demon that killed his family and was responsible for turning Nezuko into a demon. This saw his first meeting with Muzan Kibutsuji who was masquerading as a human with a family and a child. To throw the demon slayer off him, Kibutsuji scratched a traveller at Asakusa causing his sudden transformation into a demon who went on a rampage. Tanjiro went about restraining him but his activities drew the attention of the authorities who did not believe in the existence of demons and simply thought Kamado's actions were those of a disorderly nature. Tanjiro managed to escape the scene with the aid of a demon named Tamayo. Though suspicious at first, she revealed that she was actually friendly and was not subject to the bloodlust like others of her kind. In fact, she was a doctor looking to help treat others and claimed that she was intending to find a cure for those that were turned into demons. However, her research was difficult as she required a pure sample of Kibutsuji's blood that could be found among the upper ranked demons. Tanjiro eagerly agreed to help her if it meant that it would help turn Nezuko back into a human.

Nezuko accompanied Tanjiro on his first mission, where she emerged from her box to fight a copy of the Swamp Demon where she fell asleep after the Demon was defeated.

Within her box, Nezuko joined her brother as alongside Zenitsu they found a pair of children who were in desperate need to save their brother. They revealed that their brother was at the Tsuzumi Mansion where a demon resided and controlled its walls. To protect Nezuko, Tanjiro decided to leave the box containing her outside under the protection of the children warning them from opening it. He then went inside where he became displaced by the constantly shifting structure within the mansion. The mansion had been the dwelling of the demon Kyogai who once stood among the ranks of the Twelve Demon Moons until his master Kibutsuji stripped him of his position. Since then, he had been desperate to regain his former status but found one of his Tsuzumi Drums stolen by the human child Kyoshi who was desperately using it to evade the demon. Tanjiro and Zenitsu came to meet another Demon Slayer also within the mansion named Inosuke Hashibira who helped in the defeat of Kyogai. The bloodthirsty Inosuke though was keen for further battle and butted heads with the other two demon slayers where he looked to provoke Tanjiro by targeting the box containing Nezuko after smelling the demon blood within it. It was only through the efforts of Zenitsu was the box protected who took a strike from Hashibira. This fight only ended when Tanjiro used a headbutt to knock out Inosuke who ended up joining the two Demon Slayers on their travels.

Afterwards, the Demon Slayer Corps received a new deployment to deal with a threat within the forests of Mount Natagumo. A prior force had been dispatched there but they had been killed by a family of spider demons that made this region their lair. Tanjiro and his comrades would enter into the woods where they had to contend with the various powerful demons that resided in the area. Nezuko would later take part in the battle against Lower Rank 5 demon named Rui. She helped her brother at first using herself as a shield against Rui's threads but then is captured and tied up by him to the top of several trees upside down, falling asleep as a result of blood loss. Her mom's spirit asks her to wake up and help Tanjiro for saving him from Rui. She wakes up for a moment and deal the killing blow with her newly awakened Blood Demon Art, thanks to her blood that stained on Tanjiro's sword previously and through the same threads that Rui used to tie her up for defending against Tanjiro last attack instead. After that fight, Shinobu tried to stab her with poison but her attack is blocked by Giyu. Tanjiro tried to escape with Nezuko from the scene, but he fails after Kanao without being seen by him and stomped on his back. Tanjiro asks Nezuko to run and his jaw ends broken after a kick on his head. Nezuko proceeds to turn into a small child make a run for her life. Before Kanao cuts a cornered Nezuko's head off, a crow appears ordering to bring the Kamado siblings to Demon Slayers' headquarters. She decided on getting to headquarters inside her box.

She came to be awakened by Sanemi, who stabbed her in an attempt to provoke her and her brother. Sanemi trying to prove that Nezuko is dangerous, uses his marechi blood as a bait. Nezuko recalls her family and refuses to drink it at the end. She ends up becoming furious at Sanemi after being awaken and stabbed. She is carried out to the Butterfly Mansion alongside her elder brother. Nezuko spends almost the entire arc sleeping to recover her strength after she used her Blood Demon Art for the first time against Rui on Mount Natagumo. Zenitsu tells her about their breathing holding training and then promises her to take her at night where the flower he's holding was blooming. Moreover, he took the goldfish bowl from Shinobu's room without asking and shows it to Nezuko. Later, Aoi found him and chewed him out thoroughly. Since Muzan is usually able to discern demons' location whom him has given blood to and thanks to Nezuko being taken into Ubuyashiki's headquarters, he'd normally knows where to find him out, however it is learned that, like Tamayo, Nezuko has unknowingly broken that bond.

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Nezuko Kamado was a young petite Japanese girl with fair skin who had visibly large, prominent fangs, and sharp, stiletto nails with a base color of light pink and sombre fading to a red-pinkish color at the end. Her hair is long, black, and wavy. It reaches just below her waist, turning a flame-orange color as it passes her elbows, and appears to be crimped into large, straight ridges, worn side-swept drastically to her left. She has soft-looking, pale pink eyes that appear a lighter color around the rims of their irises, slanted downward toward the sides of her face and framed by notably long eyelashes, the pupils of which can appear slit as she transforms. Muzan Kibutsuji came to refer her as the Chosen Demon (選ばれし鬼 Erabareshi Oni?) as he believed her vital to his plans.

She was shown as being a kind and caring girl who thought of others before herself much like her older brother Tanjiro.

After being turned into a demon, she initially came to be bloodthirsty with her hungering for human flesh. She even came to attack her brother and looked to kill him at first. This changed though after seeing him saving her from a Demon Slayer where she became fiercely protective of him.

While Nezuko initially starts off like any other demon, bloodthirsty and hungry for human flesh, after seeing her brother's desire to protect her from being killed by a Demon Slayer despite her being a demon, she changes completely and becomes fiercely protective of him. Nezuko seems to have forgotten a good portion of her memories as a human, besides those related to her family, and thus doesn't retain the exact personality she had before transformation, instead acting akin of a child. She is still very caring and protective towards humans who she sees as members of her family, although this is mainly due to the influence Sakonji Urokodaki had on her while she was asleep for two years. Nezuko also retains some of her human emotions, as she has been seen to cry when sad and smile when happy, but in general she appears more detached than her human cohorts, although she is still much calmer and less malicious than most demons. Nezuko also tends to see the images of her siblings in other humans, like Rokuta Kamado in Yushiro.

It was shown that after her transformation she began to act more like a child.

On the rare occasion that Nezuko attempts speech, she has been seen to stutter a lot, which may be due to her bamboo mouthpiece, which is seldom removed, and the fact that she didn't speak for a number of years after her transformation. However, after developing resistance towards sunlight, which allows her to go outside and interact with others more often, her speech has shown signs of improvement and she is able to fully pronounce words if someone else has just spoken them.

She became very caring and protective towards humans who she saw as members of her family.

Powers and abilities

Originally, Nezuko Kamado was a human with no special abilities or traits. This was until one day her home became a target of the demon Muzan Kibutsuji. A result of his demon blood, she was turned into a Demon (鬼おに Oni?) where she came to gain a number of superhuman powers where gained superhuman strength, regeneration, along with the ability to alter her size by growing bigger or smaller at will. When she first became a demon, her regeneration was relatively slow compared to other demons with it taking a while to heal slash wounds. Though not one of the Twelve Kizuki, Nezuko was shown to be a very powerful demon. She was able to continuously restore her power without having to consuming any humans unlike other demons. Instead, she recovered her strength through sleep alone though she would have to spend a lot of time sleeping in order to recuperate and regain her power.

Nezuko had the ability to enter into a berserk state where she gained a more demonic appearance. This saw her transforming into an adult version of herself with vine-like tattoos that circle her body, a single horn protruding from her right forehead side. In this form, she gained enhanced regenerative abilities that allow her to heal in the blink of an eye. In her awakened state, her regeneration ability evolved to the point it matched the caliber of the Upper Ranks allowing her to reconnect her whole torso and body parts as well as regrow her arms and legs instantaneously. Even one of the Kizuki was surprised with Daki commenting that Nezuko's regenerative power surpassed her own.

In battle, her fighting style mainly revolved around the use of her powerful legs and sharp nails.

She also gained a special Blood Demon Arts (血けっ鬼き術じゅつ Kekkijutsu?) with this being a technique called Blood Burst (爆血, Bakketsu) allowing her blood to burn once it left her body. This allowed her to manipulate special demonic flames created from her blood that were pinkish in color.
