History

Octobots were a type of machine created by Doctor Octopus with him using them to aid in his various operations.

Octavius later learnt that his body was degenerating and that he could no longer use his flesh. As a result, he initiated the Master Planner program and deployed his Octobots in large numbers to accomplish his goals. This included the kidnapping of J. Jonah Jameson, Sr. along with Norah Winters and Carlie Cooper when the pair were investigating the crime scene. He had the Octobots aid in him taking complete control over technology in the city. The plan was thwarted by Spider-Man who intervened and defeated Otto but his Octobots manage to spirit him away thus allowing him to escape to plan again. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #600)

In one encounter, Spider-Man fought against several of the drones as they attempted to restrain him, their metal limbs grappling at his arms and legs while others tried to shock him into submission. Although Spider-Man ultimately destroyed the robots with his strength and agility, their ability to swarm him demonstrated Octavius’s intent to challenge his opponent with relentless mechanical pressure. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #648) Later iterations of the Octobots were adapted into reconnaissance tools, with Doctor Octopus sending them out to gather intelligence and infiltrate secure facilities. Spider-Man encountered these versions when they attempted to sabotage equipment inside a laboratory, their small frames allowing them to crawl through vents and bypass security systems. Despite their reduced size, the drones carried electric prongs in their limbs, which they used to disable machinery or shock guards who stumbled upon them. Spider-Man tracked their movements and systematically dismantled the group, but not before they demonstrated the extent of Octavius’s advances in robotics as effective spies and saboteurs. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #649)

An Octobot was present on-board the Horizon Labs Vertex shuttle where Doctor Octopus had it secretly repair the ship when it came under attack from Alistair Smythe. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #653) Hundreds of Octobots remained deactivated and unused until the Spider-Island epidemic where numerous citizens were transformed into spider hybrid monsters with them falling under the control of the Spider Queen. This was until a cure was created at Horizon with Spider-Man using the Octobots to disseminate the cure thus restoring the infected back to normal. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #672) Doctor Octopus assembled a the Sinister Six to help him take over the world as he was going to die due to cancer with them supervillains using a giant Octobot as a mobile headquarters. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #676) Hundreds of Octobots were secretly dispatched to infiltrate Horizon Labs Apogee-1 space station where they took over most of the crew. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #680) Spider-Man and the Human Torch boarded the station to save the crew after Doctor Octopus sent Apogee-1 on a crash course for the surface. They were able to rescue John Jameson and the crew by taking the sensory deprivation pod back to Earth with all the Octobots being deactivated when they could not receive any signal from their master. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #681)

The Octobots reached their most infamous use when Otto Octavius developed them into neurological interface units, capable of attaching themselves to the skull of a victim and overriding their nervous system. In this capacity, one such modified Octobot latched onto Spider-Man, initiating the mind-transfer process that resulted in Octavius exchanging bodies with Peter Parker. This event permanently altered the course of Spider-Man’s story, as Otto Octavius gained Peter’s body and powers, while Parker was trapped in Octavius’s failing frame. The Octobot’s function here was not destructive in the traditional sense but was instead the key instrument in Otto’s takeover, marking it as the most impactful of all his creations. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #700)

With his mind in an Octobot, he attempted to harvest his genetic material from his grave and use the New U technology to fashion a new body for himself. However, the grave in Potter's Cemetery was empty along with the bodies of numerous other deceased supervillains. The mind of Octavius had the Octobot access digital records and determined that New U had been taking the bodies of the dead. Through the AI Anna, he managed to arrange for his former body to be shipped to New U. The Octobot later snuck into the coffin as it was eventually paid for by New U who transported it to their facility. It found the cloned body but the mind of this form contained the mind of Peter Parker as Octavius's body had Spider-Man's persona at the time of death. The Octobot latched itself on the clone and Doctor Octopus battled Parker's persona where he killed it thus gaining control of the clone body which had been weeded of any illnesses by the Jackal's technology. (Amazing Spider-Man v4 #20)

Using an Octobot, Octavius came to learn that the Inheritors had escaped their imprisonment and had arrived on Earth-616. (Spider-Geddon v1 #2) After resuming his Superior Spider-Man guise, Octavius as Tolliver restyled his Octobots once more as Spider-Bots which he used to help him with his various tasks. (Superior Spider-Man v2 #5)

Overview

In appearance, Octobots were small, spider-like drones with round metallic central bodies and multiple thin appendages used for climbing and grappling. Their designs varied based on their function: basic units were roughly the size of a human head with six to eight articulated limbs and glowing red optics, while the more advanced neural interface models were sleeker and included specialized prongs designed to pierce or latch onto a human scalp. Combat-focused versions often appeared bulkier, with heavier plating and mounted devices such as lasers or cutting instruments. Their movements resembled those of both spiders and crabs, creating an unsettling presence as they crawled across walls, ceilings, and floors in swarms. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #648)

They came in a variety of forms including some that were smaller than a hand which resembled spheres with several tentacles. In large numbers, they could capture grown humans and keep them restrained. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #600)

The Octobots’ abilities included wall-crawling, electrical discharge through their limbs, swarm coordination, and sabotage of electronics. While individually fragile, their strength lay in numbers, with swarms overwhelming opponents through sheer persistence. Reconnaissance units could bypass most physical security measures, while combat models provided direct offensive pressure with built-in weapons. The most advanced form of Octobot, the neurological interface model, could override a human nervous system by physically linking to the brain, allowing for the unprecedented mind transfer used by Otto Octavius against Spider-Man. Despite their versatility, Octobots were ultimately vulnerable to direct physical force, as Spider-Man regularly dismantled or crushed them when confronted in combat. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #700)

Octobots were able to latch onto humans and attach themselves to the neck where they took control of the body. Thus, they were in a zombie-like state and completely under the control of the Octobot who in turn were under the control of their creator making them an extension of their will. This was only possible so long as the bodies were conscious and a loss of atmosphere could cause the Octobots to lose control over their human hosts. Magnetic interference by the robots was capable of interfering with their signal to control the host bodies. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #681)

Octobots operated on a closed system allowing them to operate independent from Octavius normal control signal methods. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #600)

Notes

  • Octobots made their first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man v1 #594 (July, 2009).

In other media

Television

  • In Spider-Man, Octobots made their first appearance during the third season where they first appeared in the episode "Make a Wish". They were described as autonomous telepathic tentacles and built by Dr. Octopus after a battle with Spider-Man leading to one of his tentacles being destroyed. Octavius later fled and built the Octobot that he showcased to the Kingpin for support. With a telepathic headband controlling it, he deployed it along with himself in an effort to destroy Spider-Man.
  • In Ultimate Spider-Man, Octobots made a number of appearances in the animated series starting in the episode "Venom". They were the creations of Doctor Octopus with one being used to get a blood sample from Spider-Man.
  • In Spider-Man, Octobots appeared in the 2017 animated television series starting from the first season episode "The Rise of Doc Ock: Part 3". They were shown to had been created by the Osborn Acadey after Doctor Otto Octavius had joined Oscorp after he left Horizon High. These machines were built on the designs of Octavius's tentacle arms but were done so without his knowledge with the robots being made as a weapon to combat the spider-army of the Jackal. Upon finding out about them, Otto was furious and sought to claim back the creations based on his designs but Osborn revealed that the legal papers signed meant that he retained control of any creations made at Osborn Academy which included the Octobots. In "Between an Ock and a Hard Place", it was shown that Carolyn Trainer had constructed her own version of more advanced Octobots to aid her in her crimes as the Lady Octopus.

Video games

  • In Marvel Heroes, an Octobot Controller was an available item in the MMORPG video game.
  • In Marvel Avengers Academy, Octobots appeared in the setting of the mobile video game and could be purchased as decoration during the Spider-Event. They were created by Doctor Octopus during his time at Oscorp and after he left then the Green Goblin took over some of them left behind where he decorated them in his colours as these were called Goblinbots.
