Biography

Omega was an artificially created construct composed of energy that was created in the 30th century by Brainiac 5. His origins were tied to the adventures of the Legion of Super-Heroes who years earlier had defeated a renegade Controller. As a reward, the other Controllers came to gift the Legion the Miracle Machine that was said to be a 'simple' device capable of turning thoughts into reality. At the time, Brainiac 5 cautioned on the use of the machine as he deemed as one could rashly wish someone dead for a second and the Miracle Machine would make it happen in the real world. Thus, the Legion came to lock the machine away into a solid block of Inertron and hit it in their vault. Years later, Brainiac 5 suffered a bout of madness where he had never been sufficiently compensated for the many times he had saved the cosmos. Thus, in his insanity he decided to destroy the universe as payment. Retrieving the Miracle Machine, he could have easily destroyed the earth, perhaps even the galaxy, but not the entire cosmos. As he put it, he could not "dream a death that large", but he could dream up a being that could accomplish such a feat. Thus, Omega was born who was created by the Miracle Machine as a physical manifestation of all the hate in the cosmos. A huge fiery humanoid figure, he appeared at the edge of the galaxy and started walking towards Earth at a tremendous speed. At this point, no one in the Legion knew his origin, only that he set off an alarm. Superboy and Mon-El were dispatched to investigate. After shrugging off a punch from Mon-El (a Daxamite with Kryptonian-class abilities), Omega knocked out Mon-El with a single punch. (Superboy and the Legion of Super-heroes v2 #251)

The Legion of Super-Heroes tried to stop Omega's advance, to no avail. Ultimately, Brainiac 5 had to be humored by "declaring" him as the ruler of the universe, before a solution was found. Tenzil Kem, the former Legionnaire Matter-Eater Lad, was summoned to use his Bismollian powers to consume the Miracle Machine itself, banishing Omega from existence. (Superboy and the Legion of Super-heroes v2 #251) Worlds came to be suspicious of the Legion after the incident involving the creation of Omega. (Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #1)

Overview

Personality and attributes

Mortal minds were said to be too feeble to fully grasp the true concept of Omega. He himself claimed to be death, destruction and the end of everything that was known and loved in the universe. Omega had said that he was the sum total and the very living embodiment of all hate that had ever existed. He claimed that his goal was the fulfilment of the hatred of all beings in the cosmos. Of all creatures in the universe, the Legion of Super-Heroes were said to be the thing that Omega had hated the most. (Superboy and the Legion of Super-heroes v2 #250) His only purpose in life was to destroy all life on Earth. (Superboy and the Legion of Super-heroes v2 #263)

Powers and abilities

He had proven himself to be more powerful than the likes of Superboy and Mon-El. (Superboy and the Legion of Super-heroes v2 #263)

Due to being created by the Miracle Machine, Omega's existence was tied to the device. Thus, if it were destroyed, then so too was Omega causing him to lose substance as he dissolved into the hundred billion trillion hatred that composed his being. These came to be dispersed back into the cosmos once more. (Superboy and the Legion of Super-heroes v2 #251)
