History
Picotech Regenerative Ordnance with a Tactically Evolving Adaptation Network (PROTEAN) was an experimental technology that was being developed by Kearson DeWitt when he worked for Stark Industries. During DeWitt's employment, he worked on a prototype ARC reactor system and developed weapons for the Theoretical Weapons Division. However, the return of Tony Stark saw the division shut down as part of his closing off all weapon related projects. Despite leaving Stark Industries, Kearson continued work on Project PROTEAN whilst he collaborated with Advanced Idea Mechanics. This saw AIM allies attack the Stark Dataspine where they confiscated an archived copy of J.A.R.V.I.S. for their ally. With the artificial intelligence in his eyes, DeWitt proceeded with his plan in creating a man/machine intelligence interface and thus created ULTIMO by using PROTEAN technology to merge into an enormous metal suit. He later ordered his followers to be upgraded with PROTEAN implants which saw the technology turn against those AIM scientists that resisted him.
Tony Stark later arrived at the site only to learn that the PROTEAN technology had become embedded throughout the facility. Furthermore, numerous PROTEAN drones later attacked him and any invaders that had arrived at the site. However, seeing the dangers of PROTEAN infection, Iron Man was forced to put JARVIS in safe mode and had to put the more dangerous weapon systems on shutdown whilst within the structure. Despite this measure, a PROTEAN infiltration did compromise several parts of the armor system until it was seemingly purged from a powerful sky strike caused by the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier. Once the danger had passed, Stark reinstated J.A.R.V.I.S. to full sentience which restored full operating capacity. Iron Man later battled an adaptive and dangerous PROTEAN Hybrid which he was only able to destroy with shock point energy equivalent of a pocket sun. Despite the destruction of the hybrid, the Iron Man armor was left paralysed when ULTIMO activated and declared its intentions of destroying its Maker namely Stark himself.
Overview
PROTEAN technology was essentially intelligent machines that were the size of an atom. Their capabilities allowed them to regenerate or modify whatever they were built for upon their activation such as being designed for weapons or other purposes. It was highly adaptive to the point that it learnt very fast from encounters. This included the capacity to adapt its systems to prevent scans from being conducted on it thus preventing any accumulation on the technology or weak points within it. Theoretically, it was able to merge with an artificial intelligence and become highly dangerous. Thus, PROTEAN was highly infectiousand sought to contaminate the operating systems of any nearby technology.
Amongst the more dangerous aspects of PROTEAN technology was the creation of dangerous anomalous constructs. These took the form of highly dangerous PROTEAN human hybrids that were able to adapt its defenses on a molecular level on a scale that present weapons were unable to affect. Such PROTEAN Hybrids were only capable of being destroyed by a powerful burst in excess of fifty petajoules.
