Biography

Just Another Rather Very Intelligent System (J.A.R.V.I.S.) was an artificial intelligence created by Tony Stark designed to aid in the functioning of the Mark 1616 Iron Man Armor. His express purpose was to act as an interface specifically for Pepper Pott's in the use of the armor's various systems whilst Stark had himself gone into hiding. (Invincible Iron Man v1 #11) After Iron Man was incapacitated, J.A.R.V.I.S. encouraged Pepper Potts to assume the Recue armor. (Invincible Iron Man v1 #515).

Afterwards, he abandoned the idea of re-using J.A.R.V.I.S. and instead began building a new A.I. from scratch that was to assist him in the use of his Iron Man Armor. (Iron Man v5 #2) Nadia van Dyne created her own J.A.R.V.I.S. A.I. to serve as a helper for Edwin Jarvis.(Avengers v1 #690)

Alternate Versions

  • In House of M: Iron Man v1 (2005), an artificial intelligence that served Tony Stark in his Iron Man Armor was known as Jarvis in the House of M. The Jarvis seen here predated the version seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In other media

Television

  • In Iron Man: Armored Adventures, the AI does not have an active role in the show. He does make an appearance though in the episode "Iron Man 2099" where Andros Stark's 2099 Iron Man Armor has an AI called J.A.R.V.I.S.
  • In Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, he makes an appearance where he assists in the operation of Tony Stark's Iron Man Armor and also helps in the operation of Avenger's Mansion.
  • In Avengers Assemble, J.A.R.V.I.S. once again makes an appearance as the interface used between Tony Stark and his Iron Man Armor.

Films

  • In Iron Man, the character was first introduced as the already established AI being used by Tony Stark and manages his home. He first appears after Christine Everhart and Tony Stark have a one-night stand where the AI helps the reporter after she wakes up the next day. When Tony returns following his abduction, J.A.R.V.I.S. assists Stark in the creation of the Mark II Armor and serves as a supporting interface of the suit. It later helps in the creation of the Mark III Armor and aids Tony in the fight against Obadiah Stane's Iron Monger suit.
  • In Iron Man 2, appears as a passcode that prevents intruders from entering in the basement and continues to support Stark in the functioning of the Iron Man Armor. He also assists Tony in the creation of a new element that was used to create a new version of the Arc reactor.
  • In The Avengers, he makes a minor appearance such as telling Stark that Coulson was looking for him. He later warns Tony that the Mark VII was not complete when he decided to wear the suit.
  • In Iron Man 3, he aids in the testing of the new Mark 42 Armor and activated the House Party Protocol in the final battle that initiated the deployment of several remotely piloted Iron Man Armors. Following the defeat of the villain, Stark asks J.A.R.V.I.S. to activate the Clean Slate Protocol that destroys all the Iron Man Armors as a sign of Tony's new devotion to Pepper Potts.
  • In Avengers: Age of Ultron, J.A.R.V.I.S. returned and was described as being a key member and resource for the Avengers during their peacekeeping machines as he mentioned their equipment, communications as well as their other needs. After Ultron came online, J.A.R.V.I.S. attempted to calm the new artificial intelligence but Ultron seemingly terminated him before he creating a body to battle the Avengers. However, a fragment of J.A.R.V.I.S. had survived where he was blocking Ultron's attempts at acquiring the world's nuclear launch codes. Stark discovered J.A.R.V.I.S.'s existence and repaired him as the Avengers sought to defeat their new mechanical foe. They were responsible for taking Helen Cho's Regeneration Cradle being used by Ultron to grow himself a partially organic advanced body. At Stark Tower, Tony intended to complete his original plan of making a friendly artificial intelligence to help save the world. In a resultant skirmish with his fellow Avengers over his plan, Thor brought a bolt of lightning into the cradle that contained the artificial body and the Mind Stone bringing him to life. The new entity was Vision that had taken on J.A.R.V.I.S.'s personality and traits though was now a completely separate entity with Tony Stark creating a new AI called F.R.I.D.A.Y. to manage his Iron Man armor.

  • In Iron Man 2 video game, an archived version of J.A.R.V.I.S. was present within the Stark Dataspine which comes under attack from the Roxxon Energy Corporation. However, it was A.I.M. that sought to acquire the AI and was masterminded by Kearson DeWitt who used the archived copy to forge Ultimo from PROTEAN technology.
