History

Project Ragna Rok was one of a number of doomsday initiatives sponsored by Adolf Hitler during the final years of World War II. Its basis was the prophecy of the Ragna Rok (The Fatal Destiny) that spoke of the release of the Ogdru Jahad from their imprisonment in the void which would bring about the end of the world. This belief was espoused by one of their servants namely the Russian occultist Grigori Rasputin who was approached by Heinrich Himmler during his meditations in Italy. Through him, he entered into Nazi Germany where he joined a cabal of scientists and occultists in creating weapons that would aid in the war effort by creating weapons of mass destruction. Thus, they came to head Project Ragna Rok where Rasputin promised a miracle that would help turn the tide of the conflict. Unknown to anyone, Rasputin had no interest in the Nazi's victory but rather intended to bring about the prophecised end of the world and thus used Hitler's resources to achieve this goal. On 23rd December 1944, the project began to enter its final phase on a small island off the Scottish coast by the name of Tarmagant Island. Project Ragna Rok intended to call forth a key in bringing an apocalypse from Hell but a complication emerged when this key instead emerged in a ruined church by East Bromwich, England. An added obstacle was the fact that the key that took the form of massive stone right hand on an infant demon was instead recovered by the Allies. The right hand of this demon that would become known as Hellboy became a much desired goal for Project Ragna Rok. However, Von Krupt viewed ths project a failure and the team was officially disbanded. In the aftermath, Rasputin journeyed to the Arctic Circle as he sought a long lost temple of the Ogdru Jahad whilst his comrades in the project namely Haupstein, Kurtz and Kroenen were cryogenically frozen until Grigori had need of them once more.
