The Psycho-Pirate was originally psychiatrist Roger Hayden, who grew psychologically addicted to the mental distress of his patients. After he began manipulating them to increase said distress, his wife and son left him for Metropolis, and he was suspended for malpractice. To make matters worse, his wife and son died in the alien attack on Metropolis that caused the formation of the Justice League. Turning his feelings of guilt and responsibility for their deaths towards the League, Hayden stole the emotion-controlling Medusa Mask and became the Psycho-Pirate.

Hayden began manipulating emotions on a grand scale, luring the Justice League to battle him and turning them against one another by magnifying their tiniest negative impulses. Ultimately, the Martian Manhunter defeated the Pirate by tapping into his mind and giving him what he really wanted- an illusory second chance with his family. Trapped in his happy delusion, Hayden was placed in an asylum.
