History
The Reavers were a race of humans that inhabited a region of space colonised by people from Earth. (Episode: Serenity)
Their origins were traced to the world of Miranda that was the outermost planet in a distant solar system. At the time, the Alliance had been testing behavioral modification on this planet through the chemical known as G-23 Paxilon Hydrochlorate ('Pax') that was administered through the air recycling systems. The chemical was designed to weed out aggression and anger. The ultimate result was that 99.9% of the population stopped going to work, talking to each other, and eventually stopped moving, eating or breeding, finally dying. However, the remaining 0.1% of the population had the opposite reaction, with their aggression and primal instincts boosted beyond simple madness into murderous rage, sadism and savagery. They began to massacre the population of Miranda with one of the surviving scientists on the project making a recording of the event before being murdered. (Movie: Serenity)
Some believed they were men that had degenerated into primitivism after living so far from civilization for so long. (Episode: Bushwhacked)
Overview
During their raids, some captives were kept alive whilst the Reavers butchered the remaining crew. The bombardment of these horrific events saw the survivors mentally breaking down whereupon they began to emulate the Reavers and become one of them. As a result, these survivors were simply new Reavers that would mutilate themselves and go into berserker rampages against other humans. (Episode: Bushwhacked)
Mercy killings of people who were captured or who fell into the hands of Reavers was considered humane. (Movie: Serenity)
Sometimes, Reavers were known to leave behind booby-traps on ships raided by them with these craft being rigged with explosives that would detonate if another vessel detached from them. (Episode: Bushwhacked)
Their craft possessed a wide variety of exotic weaponry, many of which are designed to snare and capture other ships including EMP cannons, grappling lines, and energy nets. They use weapons that fire giant sharpened disks similar to buzzsaws or shuriken, in addition to more traditional anti-ship ordnance. They also fired long, lance-like metal rods. Rather than firearms, Reavers will use any sharp object as a weapon in personal combat. They also fire toxic darts to cripple their opponents but not kill them. (Movie: Serenity)
