Biography

Ivan Kragoff (Russian: Иван Крагов)

It was known that he was involved in the Soviet program Project Zephyr and had provided apes for the mental programming research. (Winter Soldier v1 #2)

He looked to gain powers similar to those of the Fantastic Four and designed a space craft that would bombard his body with even greater amounts of cosmic rays than those heroes. To aid him, he trained a crew of apes to help manage the controls during flight where he succeeded in his goal. (Fantastic Four v1 #13)

Afterwards, he was among the many Intelligencia allies that fled to escape capture with Ivan looking to find a replacement for his lost Super Ape Miklho. Kragoff came to acquire a baby gorilla he named Grigori where he used abandoned Department X equipment to make a lab in St. Petersburg in Russia to empower the ape. The base was attacked by the She-Hulk and Lyra who were looking to arrest the supervillain allies of the Intelligencia. After the Red Ghost was neutralised, the two heroes had to contend with the Super-Apes who they managed to defeat. (She-Hulks v1 #2) Whilst on She-Hulk's jet, he regained consciousness and attempted to commandeer the craft causing it to nosedive to crash into the ground. It was intercepted by the Hulk with the heroes managed to capture Red Ghost again where they placed him in a detention cell at Gamma Base. (She-Hulks v1 #3)

Later on, he was recruited by Lucia von Bardas in her plot to frame Doctor Doom where she had Kragoff activate the dormant sleepers of Project Zephyr to serve as their operatives. (Winter Soldier v1 #3)

Overview

Personality and attributes

After gaining powers, Ivan Kragoff came to assume the name of the Red Ghost for himself. (Fantastic Four v1 #13)

He considered the Super-Apes his family and stated that he would rather die than be separated from them. (She-Hulks v1 #3)

Powers and abilities

Originally, the Red Ghost was an ordinary human being with no special powers. (Fantastic Four v1 #13)

According to him, only a genius was capable of training apes to perform complex tasks ranging from operating equipment to using weapons. He typically kept them hungry in order to make them mean, vicious and to fill their hearts with hatred. (Fantastic Four v1 #13)

He later gained powers by replicating the incident that gave the Fantastic Four their powers. This involved going into orbit to allow his boy to be bombarded by cosmic rays. As the Red Ghost, he had the ability to make himself intangible preventing him from being harm through physical impact. Through mental control, he could will any part of his body to become solid instantly thus allowing him to grab onto objects whilst the rest of his body was intangible. (Fantastic Four v1 #13)

Among his closest allies were the Super-Apes that included:

  • Miklho : a gorilla who gained super-strength following exposure to the cosmic rays. (Fantastic Four v1 #13)
  • Petoro : an orangutan who gained magnetic manipulation powers following exposure to the cosmic rays. (Fantastic Four v1 #13)
  • Igor : a baboon who became a shapeshifter following exposure to the cosmic rays. (Fantastic Four v1 #13)
  • Grigori : a young gorilla taken to replace Miklho who had been killed. (She-Hulks v1 #2)

Notes

  • The Red Ghost was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby where he made his first appearance in Fantastic Four v1 #13 (April, 1963).
