Red Goblin (Norman Osborn)
- Main Article: Norman Osborn
Norman Osborn
After taking the Goblin formula, Norman kidnapped J. Jonah Jameson in order to find out who Spider-Man was. When the Goblin King came to the Goblin cache where Norman kept Jameson, Osborn killed him. After Osborn suited up as the Green Goblin, Jameson said how he could not stop Spider-Man since even throwing Gwen Stacy off the bridge didn't stop him fighting back. Those words made Norman remember why he did it and how Peter Parker was Spider-Man. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #797) The Green Goblin attacked the Daily Bugle and told Peter to go get Spider-Man. When Spider-Man finally arrived, he and the Goblin got into a brawl as the Bugle's staff evacuated. Osborn revealed he knew who Spider-Man was under the mask, and then revealed he had bonded to the Carnage symbiote. Osborn transformed into a monstrous form he dubbed the Red Goblin, causing Spider-Man to flee in terror. Incapacitating Peter, Osborn issued an ultimatum: give up being Spider-Man, or watch the Red Goblin painfully kill all of his loved ones. When Spider-Man accepted the terms, the Red Goblin left in triumph. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #798)
The Red Goblin's next target was his own family. Following Harry, Liz, and Mark Raxton to the Port Authority, Norman confronted his family and his wife, Emily, who was thought dead for years, as she tried to flee with her grandchildren. The Goblin was then assaulted by the Human Torch, Clash, Silk, and Spider-Man; however, the Red Goblin defeated all four in moments. The arrival of Agent Anti-Venom and his symbiote-destroying powers caught Osborn off guard, but he turned the tables by forcing Agent Anti-Venom to make a difficult choice: defeat him or save his mortally wounded friends. Agent Anti-Venom chose the latter, but paid for it, as the Goblin cut him down while he saved the last of his friends. Norman then tracked down his family, who had attempted to flee in the confusion, and revealed his true objective: his grandson, Normie Osborn, who he then infected with a piece of the Carnage Symbiote. Red Goblin (Normie Osborn)
- Main Article: Normie Osborn
Normie Osborn
Setting out to fight crime as a superhero, Normie and Rascal encountered a resurgent Goblin Nation being led by the undead Goblin King Phil Urich, who had a grudge against Normie's grandfather Norman for murdering him as the original Red Goblin. Coming across some Goblin Nation thugs attacking a civilian, Normie and Rascal engaged them but were zapped by lightning from a Sparkle Gauntlet. Seizing control in a berserk rage, Rascal attempted to eat one of the Goblin Nation thugs but was distracted by a chocolate bar, enabling the thug to attack the Red Goblin with a Pumpkin Bomb and knock Normie unconscious. Puppeteering Normie's body, Rascal broke into a bodega and ate their entire stock of chocolate -- resulting in Normie being arrested by the police in the morning. Scolding Rascal for assuming the form of the Red Goblin and causing trouble by robbing the bodega, Normie decided to leave it at the Osborn Manor while he went to attend the grand opening of Harold Osborn Addiction Treatment Center. When Normie refused to take it with him and threatened to return it to Dylan if it did not start behaving itself, Rascal flew into a rage and attacked him. Rascal hid under his bed when Liz Allan came in to check on him, spending the rest of the evening sulking. (Red Goblin v1 #1) After Normie's grandfather, Norman, was kidnapped by the Goblin Nation, Normie rebonded to Rascal in order to save him. (Red Goblin v1 #2)
During the battle against the Goblin King and his goons, Rascal brought Normie into their shared mindscape and revealed to him that it behaved like a monster because it was simply bringing out its host's inner darkness. Concluding that he himself was a monster all along, Normie cut Rascal loose and they were able to overpower the Goblin Nation and bring Norman to a hospital. Depressed, Normie then met with a homeless woman and her dog named Trevor, and after being scared at the animal at first the woman explained that animals like Trevor were just misunderstood creatures that needed training, which helped Normie better understand his relationship with Rascal. (Red Goblin v1 #3) Norman, having figured out that his grandson was bonded to a symbiote, confronted Normie in his office at Oscorp and convinced him to go inside a machinery to remove the symbiote from his body, saying that it was too dangerous for him. However, after Rascal was removed from Normie, Norman quickly got his grandson out and left the symbiote inside the machine, intending to kill it. At this point, a security guard who'd been blackmailed by the Hammerhead into stealing to Norman's Goblin Armor and Glider disabled the building's electrical system, allowing Rascal to get free and attack Norman. The two crashed through a window and began falling, attempting to kill each other. However, sensing that Normie was in danger, Rascal bonded to Norman and climbed back to the room where the hapless guard -- who'd donned the Goblin armor and was struggling to control it -- accidentally set off small bombs. Rascal devoured the bombs and absorbed the blast, taking advantage of Norman's Goblin Serum making it fireproof, before returning to Normie. Normie told Norman that Rascal was unlike Carnage and would not allow his grandfather to harm it. (Red Goblin v1 #4)
Overview
In appearance, the Red Goblin was a human bonded to a Symbiote thus granting them all the superhuman trait given by the parasitic species. Their form was thus covered in red Symbiote matter whilst possessing a monstrous form of the Green Goblin. On top of that, their body also possessed a tail. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #798)
Due to being based on the Green Goblin, the Red Goblin was able to manifest weapons based on that persona. Instead of Pumpkin-Bombs, the Red Goblin was able to manifest laughing Carnage-Bombs from its own substance. These possessed Symbiote heads that laughed, spoke and tracked their targets. In fact, they were able to bite onto their target to latch onto them before exploding. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #798)
The original Carnage Symbiote-based Red Goblin was noted to not being able to trigger Spider-Man's Spider-Sense. (Amazing Spider-Man v1 #798)
The Rascal symbiote originated as an offshoot of Bedlam left in the care of Kang the Conqueror. (Venom v5 #25) As a newborn symbiote, Rascal was described by Normie Osborn as being like a puppy. Lacking a connection to the Symbiote Hive-Mind, it is inquisitive, naive, easily-distracted, and prone to lashing out in feral rages that Normie dubbed Goblin Mode -- wherein it assumes a monstrous appearance similar to Norman Osborn's Red Goblin form. Much like the Venom symbiote, Rascal enjoys eating chocolate and is easily distracted by it. (Red Goblin v1 #1) During the battle against the Goblin Nation, Normie realized that Rascal behaved like a monster because it was simply bringing out its host's deepest and darkest desires which Normie had kept suppressed. Normie was able to unite with his symbiote only after finally letting himself loose and acting on those desires, before eventually regaining control. (Red Goblin v1 #3)
