Biography

Origin

Richard Drakunovski

Fifteen years ago, he lived as a thief in Japan where he tried to steal a jade Buddha statue from a temple in Kyoto. The place was actually the home of an elderly martial arts master called the O-Sensei. After catching the boy, Richard attempted to kill the old man but was easily defeated by the unarmed master. He was then introduced to the Japanese man's other student Benjamin Turner where they revealed that the temple was a school tasked with teaching students the martial arts. The O-Sensei offered Ricard a place among them even though he tried to steal from them where he said that he sensed good in the young man's heart. Whilst there, he spent the next six years where the young Dragon studied the fighting arts and western world disciplines like history, philosophy as well as science along with the many eastern secrets. (Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter v1 #1) Dragon and Turner decided to start their new lives in New York City, traveling with the O-Sensei's goddaughter Carolyn Woosan. They are attacked when they get there, and Carolyn is kidnapped by a spy called the Swiss. (Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter v1 #2) The Swiss became obsessed with Richard, and set up an ambush with exotic weapons experts. Richard defeated them by channeling his strength with the Dragon's Claw given to him by O-Sensei. (Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter v1 #3) He then pursued the Swiss by motorcycle, leading to a car accident where Carolyn is killed. This devastated Richard, and he followed the Swiss to an empty junkyard then beat him to death in a fight. (Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter v1 #4)

In the aftermath of this tragedy, Ben and Richard set up a martial arts school in Manhattan. Barney Ling enlisted Richard to take down Guano Cravat, an industrialist who hired the Swiss to kidnap Carolyn. Carolyn's sister is the deadly assassin Lady Shiva, and Cravat trickd Shiva into fighting Richard. Richard convinced Shiva that he did not kill Carolyn, and they teamed up to stop Cravat. (Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter v1 #5) Their extraction plane was crashed by a pirate named Slash, who Richard was able to defeat. (Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter v1 #6) Cravat returned to take revenge on Dragon and Shiva by hiring Doctor Moon to kill them. Dragon and Shiva defeated Moon's surgically altered brutes, but Cravat and Moon escaped. (Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter v1 #7) Slash returned and used a trap to blind Richard, but Richard was able to defeat him even with no eyesight. (Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter v1 #8)

Ben Turner was targeted by assassins. Ling promised to give them intel if they will do another mission for him. Richard went to the Caribbean with Shiva and Turner to defeat the mysterious Preying Mantis. (Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter v1 #9) Turner learned that his sister was murdered by a corrupt logger named Hatchett. The trio defeat Hatchett to rescue Turner's nephew Benjamin, Jr.. (Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter v1 #10) Turner was attacked by another strange assassin, the Silent Samurai. Barney Ling sent them on an undercover mission to China, where Dragon killed the Samurai. (Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter v1 #11) They are drawn into a conflict between Blodwyn and Madame Sun of the Doomsday Tong, where Richard is forced to defeat a clone of himself. (Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter v1 #12) Ben is poisoned in another attack, and Shiva recognized the League of Assassins. Dragon and Shiva pursued the assassin Viper to Mongolia where he died trying to escape. (Richard Dragon, Kung-Fu Fighter v1 #13)

Just as Sage's doomed efforts to save Hub City threatened to destroy him, Dragon arrived to advise his student. Dragon finally convinced Sage that his crusade to save Hub City was no longer doing anything but destroying him. When Sage collapsed from exhaustion and his injuries, Richard revealed that he was capable of using his legs perfectly, and put Sage in the wheelchair. Dragon had realized he would need the chair to make Sage let down his defenses - Sage was so "full of macho" that he would never have listened to him otherwise. (Question v1 #34) The chair had not been just a charade, however. Richard revealed that he had allowed himself to be handicapped as part of his own learning process, going on to state "I was a teacher then. I am about to become something else. So I discard that option". The city had truly degenerated by this point with all pretense of law and order long lost. Richard, who had thought his studies had put him beyond such things, found himself shocked and horrified by the actions of people in Hub City. For example, a man was using a dead baby to try and beg for 'milk money'. When Richard and the others uncovered this, he tossed the body into a nearby trashcan. (Question v1 #35)

Myra wanted to drive Vic home, but her car had been destroyed by vandals. A man approached them swaddling an infant begging for money. Myra noticed the child was dead and the man said he’d hoped they wouldn’t notice before dumping the little body in a trashcan. The incident catalyzed how rotten Hub City had become for them. Richard Dragon rose from his wheelchair and seated the still delirious Vic. Richard explained that when Vic sought training from him his nature would have seen Richard Dragon as a threat and someone to be defeated if he was at his peak. His mental control over his body allowed him to remain handicapped from a time until he no longer needed to be. Fermin found someone had set her office on fire, and the fire department was no longer operating so she decided they should return to Aristotle's house. They came across Izzy O’Toole, still sitting by the body of the fake Question. He’d realized that the imposter was in jail when the cowboy bounty hunters came to town to fight Question, so he realized he was a fake. At Aristotle’s Izzy put Vic into bed and said he realized that if Melly robbed Vic it meant he was the Question, and asked why he’d chosen to become a vigilante. Vic said putting on the mask let him act the way he felt on the inside and admitted that in recent days he questioned more and more who he really was. Izzy said he wanted to go bust some heads and left to patrol. Myra told Vic she loved him, which she realized neither of them had ever said to the other, even in the heat of passion. Everyone woke the next day and Vic and Myra celebrated Christmas by playing in the snow. Vic reiterated that they had to leave, telling Fermin there was nothing she, he or anyone else could do for Hub because it was beyond helping. They picked up Myra’s daughter Jackie, and the nun at her school begged Myra to take some of the orphans at her school away from Hub City, but Myra said they didn’t have room. Richard Dragon arranged for a helicopter to pick them up, and Lady Shiva was aboard. She told Vic she wanted to test herself against the anarchy of Hub City and would be taking his place. Myra had a change of heart and told Vic she had to stay and asked him to watch over Jackie. She said she had a responsibility and duty to help her constituents even if it was hopeless. She told Vic she loved him again before leaving. (Question v1 #36)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

It was said that Ricardo Diaz, Jr. sought out Richard Dragon and to learn from him in order to find the skills he needed to avenge his crime lord father's death. His mentor came to teach him to show patience, peace and compassion but Ricardo came to see this as weakness. He was seemingly responsible for killing his master but in honor of him he took on his name as the new Richard Dragon. (Green Arrow v5 #32)
