History
A Runabout
They were used during the Federation’s initial occupation of the former Cardassian station. These vessels functioned as heavy-duty scouts and transport craft, far more robust than standard starship shuttles, equipped with their own warp drives and modular living quarters. Commander Benjamin Sisko and Lieutenant Jadzia Dax utilised one to conduct a high-resolution sensor sweep of the nearby Denorios Belt, where they eventually discovered the entrance to the first stable wormhole known to the Alpha Quadrant. Upon entering the celestial temple, the runabout was subjected to intense graviton fluctuations, yet its durable hull and advanced navigation systems allowed the crew to survive the transit to the Gamma Quadrant. Later, the ships played a defensive role when the station faced a potential confrontation with Cardassian Galor-class warships, proving that these compact vessels could handle both scientific exploration and tactical maneuvers in deep space. Later on, the runabout Rio Grande served as a critical mobile laboratory and transport for Commander Sisko and Lieutenant Jadzia Dax during a scientific mission to the Denorios Belt. The crew utilised the vessel’s sophisticated sensor suite to investigate a mysterious, non-biological probe that had emerged from the wormhole, eventually bringing the object back to the station for further study. Later, when a vengeful mob threatened a shape-shifting suspect on the station, Sisko prepared the runabout as a potential means of evacuation to ensure the individual’s safety. Throughout the assignment, the craft functioned as a primary scouting tool, allowing the command staff to monitor the aperture of the wormhole and respond to incoming spatial anomalies that the station's fixed sensors could not fully resolve.
