Biography

S'Yan was a male of the Wakandan Royal Family who was noted for being the son of T'Chanda aka Azzuri the Wise and the younger brother of T'Chaka. As young boys, their father served as king and as the Black Panther who protected Wakandan from Nazi Germany during World War II. At the time, Captain America Steve Rogers operated and was deployed into the Wakandan region by the United States Military where he befriended the Black Panther. As the Red Skull launched an attack, the young T'Chaka wanted to join his father in battle but his mother scolded him for not being like his younger brother S'Yan. An angry T'Chaka replied that S'Yan only read books and would never understand the burdens of leadership leading to a brief fight between the siblings until their mother broke it up. (Black Panther/Captain America: Flags of Our Fathers v1 #2) Afterwards, another fight broke out between S'Yan and T'Chaka with their father intervening where he forced them to dig graves for the Wakandan dead until they learnt their lesson. (Black Panther/Captain America: Flags of Our Fathers v1 #3) As the Nazi forces renewed their attack, the Queen and her two children were ambushed by the Tiger Man. T'Chaka attempted to battle the German warrior only to be captured and nearly killed until they were saved by Gabriel Jones of the Howling Commandos. (Black Panther/Captain America: Flags of Our Fathers v1 #4)

After the death of King T'Chaka, S'Yan adopted the mantle of the Black Panther and participated in the Wakandan yearly ritual combat for claiming that mantle of leadership. He defeated numerous challengers for the throne that included his own son T'Shan. (Black Panther v4 #2) Another contender was Jakarra who was a hidden child of T'Chaka who sought to claim the throne but was defeated by S'Yan with him finding the child unworthy but he gave him his inheritance in an effort to keep him on the sidelines. (Rise of the Black Panther v1 #5) This was until a masked warrior entered the ring and battled S'Yan who was defeated in the fight. It was then revealed that the victor was his own nephew T'Challa who became the new Black Panther. (Black Panther v4 #2)

He came to sit on the inner council of advisors to King T'Challa regarding matters of state that included finding the murderers responsible for T'Chaka's death. During the discussion, S'Yan reminded his nephew that he needed to appoint an ambassador to the United Nations with T'Challa suggesting him. However, S'Yan refused on the account of his age with T'Challa then deciding to appoint his cousin T'Shan in his stead. (Black Panther v4 #3)

As the Desturi took control of the government, the dissident group came to arrest all members of the royal family. This included Storm, Queen Mother Ramonda and S'Yan who were brought to the Desturi's ally Doctor Doom who sought to claim the nation's supply of Vibranium. Storm refused to cooperate leading to execution of royals and their friends with Ramonda being targeted. S'Yan attempted to intervene to stop the Queen-Mother from being killed but was instead shot leading to him dying from his wound. (Doomwar v1 #1)
