History
Special Threat Assessment for Known Extranormalities (S.T.A.K.E.) was a special branch of S.H.I.E.L.D. that was created to respond to supernatural occurrences caused by monsters with it being a new iteration of the Howling Commandos. For the project, Director Maria Hill had a new Life Model Decoy of Dum Dum Dugan re-activated after it was discovered that the real one had died long ago and that Nick Fury had created endless robotic copies based on the original's mind. Dugan was then sent to meet with the team's supervisor Martin Reyna and Dr. Paul Kraye who worked on the project where they introduced him to the team. Among the members of S.T.A.K.E. included his former comrade Jasper Stillwell who had been resurrected as a zombie. (S.H.I.E.L.D. v3 #9)
Upon getting the approval, Dum Dum Dugan and S.T.A.K.E. formed an incarnation of the Howling Commandos with Warwolf being their supervisor and consisting of Jasper Sitwell's zombie form, Vampire by Night, Man-Thing, Manphibian, Orrgo, Teen Abomination, and Hit-Monkey. Their first mission involved the Earth Idol of Golthana that was being smuggled on the S.S. Chaney and turned its crew into humanoid plant monsters. While the Howling Commandos were successful in defeating the transformed crew members, they merged into one giant plant monster. Man-Thing used his touch to burn the giant plant monster where its link to the Earth Idol of Golthana caused it to burn as well. (Howling Commandos of S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #1)
Paul Kraye caught Orrgo going through some S.T.A.K.E. files and informed Maria Hill enough for Orrgo to be sent to Pleasant Hill. The rest of the Howling Commandos rescued Orrgo and were teleported back to S.T.A.K.E. HQ by Kobik where they found that Paul Kraye had released every monstrous inmate there. This causes the Howling Commandos to spring into action. (Howling Commandos of S.H.I.E.L.D. v1 #6)
At the time when Hydra took over S.H.I.E.L.D. and most of the United States, the Howling Commandos alongside S.T.A.K.E. fell under Hydra's control. (Secret Warriors v2 #2)
