Biography
Pre-Crisis
Sandy Hawkins
Sandman and Sandy were on night-time patrol when they saw a man cracking a safe with unparalleled ease. They tried to stop him, but he anticipated their every move and locked them in the vault. They were able to escape by setting off the alarm inside the vault, but the police that responded mistook them for the perpetrators and they had to flee. The duo did some detective work and determined that the thief was Professor Hiram Gaunt, who had invented a machine that stimulated unused neurons, making himself a superhuman genius. They tracked Gaunt to a casino where underworld figures were trying to recruit him for planning robberies. They took out the criminals, and Gaunt admitted that Sandman was the only problem he could not figure out. (Adventure Comics v1 #74) Sandy was reading a book of Norse myths and told Wes that he wished he could tangle with a customer as tough as Thor. The next evening Sandman told Sandy he had got his wish. A criminal posing as Thor had just robbed a bank Wes was a shareholder in. They tracked down Thor, but he easily defeated the heroes, badly injuring Sandy with a hammer shot to the head. Thor escaped to his Viking ship, but made the mistake of removing the protective armor he wore to give the impression of having godlike abilities. He reasoned that the police would be on the lookout for a Viking, not a common criminal. His timing was bad, as Sandman and the NYPD spotted them, and without Thor’s metal bodysuit he was easy prey for Sandman, who avenged his partner by sending Thor to the hospital. (Adventure Comics v1 #75)
Millionaire Monroe Alvin was terrified of the dark and plagued with dreams about being a violent criminal who met a violent end. He decided that Sandman could help him, and placed an ad in the paper. Sandman and Sandy found him at his mansion talking with thugs Torchy Grogan and Bugs Baron, and he insisted he no longer needed Sandman’s help. Sandman learned that the hoods were blackmailing Alvin with pictures showing him committing crimes. Sandman learned from one of Alvin’s servants that he had been hit by a car and lapsed into an amnesiac state for three days. Sandman and Sandy knew the crooks must have posed Alvin while he was in shock, and when Alvin was ready to hand a million dollars over to the crooks, the heroes intervened. They defeated Bugs and Torchy, and put the final piece together when they learned that Alvin’s doctor Hoak was responsible for coming up with the plan. (Adventure Comics v1 #77)
Wes and Sandy would visit Dodd's friend Nick Parks, an aspiring detective who had just gotten his first case which was guarding the Hackle Jewlery Company. Wes did not place that much faith in his friend since he was prone to narcolepsy. Parks nodded off when the Company was robbed by Felix Black and his gang, putting his detective company in danger. Black spent decades without sleep, and had turned to crime to ruin the good night sleep of others. Parks pursed Black and his gang and caught them red-handed. They knocked out Parks, and were forced to flee with Parks in toe. Black took them to his mansion, and his gang decided they’d had enough of his lunatic plans and demanded he fork his money over to them. They were also planning on executing parks, even though Black had specifically forbid his gang from murdering anyone. Black wept, realizing he should never have chosen a life of crime. Sandman and Sandy located the gang, and saved his friend. One of Black’s gang shot him in disgust before the Sandman apprehended him. Miraculously the bullet only grazed his skull, but finally allowed him to sleep. Black thanked Sandman profusely and promised to serve out his sentence and then dedicate himself to humanity. Sandman noted that he had once again acted as an instrument of fate. (Adventure Comics v1 #80)
'Gentleman Jack' placed an anonymous ad in the paper requesting a meeting with Sandman. Sandy wanted to come along, but Sandman chastised him, saying he’d only get in the way. The hero obliged, and recognized Jack as a criminal he put away. Jack explained that he never wanted for comfort, nor missed it until he went to jail because of Sandman. Sandman thought he was just an interesting psychological case for recreating his own prison, but then Jack revealed his plans for revenge, he had long dreamed of making his prision a luxurious home while watching Sandman slowly die in solitary. He locked Sandman in a cell and slowly started pumping air out of the room. Fortunately Sandy had followed him to Jack’s, and freed his partner. The heroes defeated Jack’s goons, and sent him back to jail. Jack raved that he was framed, and was put in solitary, his worast nightmare. Sandman left him a note telling him that his own character shaped not only his dreams but his fate. (Adventure Comics v1 #85)
Post-Crisis
Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Sandy Hawkins
With their success, the assembled heroes decided to reform the Justice Society where Alan Scott decided to make Sand Hawkins its chairman. Sand was deeply honoured and accepted the role but then his body transformed into sand that collapsed into the ground. (JSA v1 #4) He was then shunted deep beneath the crust of the planet where through an incredible act of will he managed to reconstitute his body to return to the surface before he suffocated. Sand then made his way to TylerCo to study his condition where it was determined by Dr. Iker that his body had become a silicon-based form. Hourman arrived after tracking his team mate and was informed about his comrades fate. (JSA v1 #5)
Sandy went to meet Carter Hall where he was ready to abandon the position of leadership to him due to his experience but Hawkman refused as he stated he was confident in Hawkins remaining as leader. Afterwards, Sandy went to check on Kendra who was upset after Hawkman visited her and gave her families as she did not want to be bound by fate to him. This resulted in her kissing Sands whilst he was consoling her. (JSA v1 #26) Sandy pushed her to the side where she confessed that she wanted to impulsively be involved with anyone but Hawkman. Hawkins forgave her and stated that he would ask Carter Hall to stay at a distance from Kendra Saunders. It was then that his attention was diverted to a fight between Black Adam and the Justice Society that erupted when Atom-Smasher punched Teth-Adam. He attempted to defuse the situation but Hawkman took charge personally at ending the fight. This resulted in Sands being angry at his authority being subverted and he confronted Hawkman where he asked whether he wanted to be leader or not. It was then that the Justice Society decided to put a vote on who they wanted leader with the group deciding on Mr. Terrific who became the groups new chairman. Holt apologised at taking the role but Hawkins held no resentment at his position being taken and agreed to follow Michael as leader. It was then that the group were all abducted by a retrofitted T-Sphere on behalf of Roulette. (JSA v1 #27)
As Mordru was weakened, his old over Sandy was gone and he returned back to his human form. However, the crisis was not over as the Earth had become geologically unstable due to the Moon being displaced. This threatened to cause earthquakes which could destroy the world. To stop it, Sandy turned into his sand form and journeyed deep into the core of the Earth where he used his powers to geomagnetically keep it stable. As a result, the Earth was saved but this came at the cost of Sandy who was unable to return and had to remain behind in the planet's core. (JSA v1 #50) Whilst trapped beneath the earth, his mind fell into a dream realm where it was intruded upon by the nightmares Brute and Glob. They manipulated his mind making him think he was another Sandman in an effort for the nightmares to attain their own freedom. This resulted in tectonic disturbances around the world as the dream state affected Sandy's body with this attracting the attention of the Justice Society. They came to learn of Sandy's fate and formed a mission to rescue him with two teams assembled with one recovering Hawkins body whilst the other saved his mind. The team that journeyed into Sandy's mind had to contend with Brute and Glob but Doctor Fate's powers allowed him to dispel the creatures. This combined with Kendra's presence allowed Sandy to recover his identity with his mind being reunited with his body that was freed by Power Girl. Thus, Sandy was taken to the hospital where the Justice Society were there for him as he made a full recovery. (JSA v1 #64) He later re-joined the Justice Society by participating in field work where he helped take down Solomon Grundy. (JSA v1 #65)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events. Sandy Hawkins
Overview
Personality and attributes
It was said that he was attracted to Kendra Saunders when she joined the team. (JSA v1 #64) She later reciprocated these feelings by kissing him with Hawkgirl's presence helping him restore his identity after he was lost in a dream realm. (JSA v1 #65)
Powers and abilities
He could use this ability to travel across fault lines to distant locations on the planet but had to concentrate in order to reform his body where initially he emerged as a naked sand-based humanoid. In time, Sand came to refine the use of his powers allowing him to pass through any objects with silica in it including glass and bricks. This allowed him to also not leave sand in his wake whenever he used his ability. (JSA v1 #5)
In time, his control over his powers allowed him to focus an 8.5 earthquake over a 10-foot diameter which he could direct against enemies. (JSA v1 #65)
Tylerco came to provide him a silica-based fabric that allowed him to take his costume with him whenever he was travelling through fault lines. (JSA v1 #5)
