History
Sarlaccs were large immobile life forms that were native to the galaxy far, far away.
On the planet Tatooine, one Sarlacc came to land deep in the desert where it became known as the Great Pit of Carkoon.
After Luke Skywalker killed Jabba's Rancor as part of his rescue of Leia Organa, Han Solo, and Chewbacca, Jabba became outraged and ordered that they all be fed to the almighty sarlacc. The prisoners were transported to the Great Pit of Carkoon via floating desert skiffs. Luke described this as being the last mistake that he would ever make, but Jabba was unimpressed and had the group escorted out. While standing on the plank above the creature's gaping maw, Luke Skywalker initiated a pre-planned ambush, drawing his lightsaber to combat Jabba’s mercenary guards. Skywalker, using his recently developed skills as a Jedi Knight, rescued the group, and led to a number of Jabba's guards becoming victims of the sarlacc instead. During the chaotic skirmish on the skiffs, several guards were knocked off the platforms and fell directly into the pit, where the Sarlacc immediately ensnared them in its long, writhing tentacles and dragged them downward into its throat. Bounty hunter Boba Fett attempted to intervene, but his jetpack was accidentally activated by a blind Han Solo striking it with a vibro-axe, sending Fett flying into the side of Jabba’s sail barge before he tumbled down into the pit. The creature wrapped a tentacle around Fett's leg and dragged him beneath the sand just before Princess Leia Organa caused the entire structural failure and explosion of Jabba's sail barge right next to the pit.
Unable to move quickly, the creature was wounded when Jabba's sail barge, Khetanna, exploded. Trapped inside the suffocating, narrow interior of the Sarlacc's digestive tract, a conscious Boba Fett found himself completely immobilized alongside a deceased Imperial Stormtrooper. The interior walls of the creature's stomach continuously pulsed and secreted highly caustic, burning digestive acids that began reacting with Fett's protective armor plating. Operating on a depleting oxygen supply inside his helmet, Fett managed to reach over to the deceased stormtrooper's armor, extracting a functional internal breathing tube to draw emergency oxygen into his own suit. With his immediate respiration secured, Fett broke one arm free from the constricting internal flesh of the organism, punching directly into the interior mucosal wall of the stomach. He activated his wrist-mounted gauntlet flamethrower at point-blank range, unleashing a sustained burst of superheated fire that thoroughly incinerated the inner lining of the beast's stomach. The extreme internal trauma caused the creature to relax its grip, allowing Fett to push forward, clawing his way upward through meters of dense sand and debris until his hand breached the desert surface alongside the burning wreckage of Jabba's sail barge. Years after his initial escape from the Great Pit of Carkoon, Boba Fett teamed up with the master assassin Fennec Shand to infiltrate his former sanctuary and recover his lost armor, which he mistakenly believed was still located within the creature's belly. Flying his heavy Firespray gunship directly over the deep desert hollow, Fett descended into the maw of the pit, utilizing the ship's powerful external spotlight to illuminate the dark, organic throat of the creature. Believing the beast to be dead from his previous flamethrower attack, Fett hovered too close, causing the Sarlacc to suddenly awaken and launch its massive tentacles outward. The creature forcefully gripped the hull of the starship, wrapping tightly around the chassis and aggressively dragging the massive mechanical vehicle downward into the shifting sand. The creature's powerful beak and tentacles threatened to crush the cockpit hull until Fennec Shand managed to loosen a seismic charge from the ship's internal weapon systems, dropping the explosive device directly down into the open throat of the Sarlacc. The resulting massive sonic detonation tore through the creature's internal biology, instantly killing the specimen and forcing its tentacles to permanently slacken.
Overview
In appearance, Sarlacc were large sunken beast of enormous size that burrowed deep in the ground leaving a large pit that served as the entrance to its ghastly mouth. The only visible part of the creature was its beaked maw that was lined with spiky teeth around which contained well-muscled tentacles to latch onto prey.
It was noted that the large, carnivorous cephalopods creatures known as Rathtars were related to Sarlaccs.

- In Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, a sarlacc appeared in the setting of the 2008 video game. A gigantic such specimen resided on the planet Felucia where it came to be known as the Ancient Abyss. It was considered the largest specimen known at the time where it was worshipped by the native humanoid Felucians. The Pit was used as a sacrificial place by the native Felucians for many years prior to the arrival of Jedi Master Shaak Ti. After learning that Darth Vader's assassin, Starkiller, had arrived on Felucia to kill her, Shaak Ti made her way to the Ancient Abyss, where she confronted the aspiring Sith apprentice. During the battle, Shaak Ti's rancor mount was attacked by a tentacle of the giant sarlacc, which forced the beast into its maw, where it was consumed. Shaak Ti attempted to use the massive sarlacc to kill Starkiller; however, she failed, and he defeated her. Wounded, she gave a warning to Starkiller that the Sith always betrayed one another, before willingly falling into the maw of the sarlacc.
