Biography

Origin

Sasha Bordeaux

Her experience led to her being hired by Lucius Fox who wanted her to protect Wayne Enterprises head Bruce Wayne though Bordeaux was initially reluctant to take on the assignment before she ultimately agreed. (Detective Comics v1 #751) Wayne later disappeared with Sasha attempting to find him and went to Wayne Manor where he arrived with lipstick on his face claiming that he had gone out with a date. The angry Bordeaux commented that he was making her job as his bodyguard difficult but he apologised and offered to make her breakfast. (Detective Comics v1 #752) For the next four months, she continued to operate in her role but grew frustrated by Wayne constantly disappearing which meant that kept herself close to him at all times. She later attended James Gordon's retirement party alongside Bruce Wayne when she lost her charge and went to find him only to be taken hostage by Two-Face. Two-Face later flipped a coin and decided not to shoot Gordon but rather give a speech on his time as Commissioner with no incident occurring at the event. Bordeaux was later reunited with Bruce who stated that he had accidently gone to the ladies toilets with Sasha accepting this excuse though she secretly knew that he was lying. (Detective Comics v1 #755) Afterwards, she was packing through Wayne's luggage and found numerous Batman related equipment within one of suitcases. (Detective Comics v1 #756) Part of her thought to quit her assignment but instead she decided to confront the Batman when he was on a mission. Despite her attempts, she was not able to do so and instead accompanied Bruce during his public ventures. On one night, she realised that Bruce Wayne was aware of the fact that he knew of her secret identity. (Detective Comics v1 #758)

One night while Batman and Bordeaux are out on patrol, the assassin David Cain lures Wayne's ex-girlfriend Vesper Fairchild to Wayne Manor and kills her, framing Wayne in the process. (Batman: The 10-Cent Adventure v1 #1) Both Wayne and Bordeaux are charged with murder, and Sasha refuses to exonerate herself by giving up Wayne's secret despite the fact that they were patrolling separate areas at the time of the murder and therefore even she cannot be sure of Bruce's innocence. (Detective Comics v1 #766)

Checkmate

Whilst in prison custody, Sasha is severely wounded by another prisoner. She would have died had the government agency Checkmate not given her medical treatment. They fake her death and offer to give her a new name and identity complete with plastic surgery if she would work for them. With no other options, she was forced to agree to their terms and joined the organization. (Detective Comics v1 #774) Batman searches for Sasha, not believing she had died in prison. To facilitate this, he disrupts all of Checkmate's operations in Gotham City. They organize a meeting between the two, where Wayne confesses he loves her. Sasha tells him to let her go. (Detective Comics v1 #775)

Bordeaux rises through the ranks of Checkmate to become right hand to Maxwell Lord, the group's leader.

Maxwell Lord hijacks the Brother I satellite that Batman had created to monitor all superhuman activity. Brother I itself had recently become sentient due to the actions of Alexander Luthor, Jr., as a part of his plans for the Infinite Crisis. He also created an army of cyborgs known as OMACs (who are originally human, transformed when needed by a virus) programmed to hunt and kill all superhumans and or specific targets. During his rule, Lord kills all who oppose him, assisted by Brother I who monitors for rebellion. Sasha feigns loyalty to stay alive, but breaks this when Lord kills his former ally Blue Beetle. Sasha is given the job of disposing of the body. She steals the goggles and sends them to Batman as part of a message detailing Lord's madness.

One year after Infinite Crisis, Bordeaux is the "Black Queen" of the Checkmate organization. In the first issue of the new Checkmate comic series, she leads a group of operatives into a Kobra stronghold. As the new series began, Bordeaux was depicted as a cold-blooded killer; it remains to be seen whether this is an after effect of her conversion to cyborg, or due to events of the previous year. Her "the ends justify the means" attitude towards the success of Checkmate missions has put her into conflict with Alan Scott. She is also in conflict with several of her Checkmate colleagues, particularly Fire and Mister Terrific, with whom she is romantically involved. As the series progressed, this aspect of her personality was rarely referred to again. In a 2007 story arc involving The Outsiders, Bordeaux suffers extreme torture at the hands of Chang Tzu who wished to lean learn more about her cybernetic implants. Although she survives this encounter, subsequent issues have had her fighting to regain her confidence, especially when the healing process results in even more of her body becoming cybernetic. Sasha intervenes in the trial of Wonder Woman (for murdering Maxwell Lord) by secretly delivering exonerating evidence to Wonder Woman's lawyer, Kate Spencer.

She continued to serve as the Black Queen until Final Crisis where, by using her connection to Brother Eye, she sacrificed her consciousness in a desperate attempt to reactivate Brother Eye and the OMACs under Checkmate's control to help against Darkseid's forces. She later remains in a coma for a while where she wakes up in the end. Later on, it was mentioned that she has resigned from Checkmate. (Justice League: Generation Lost v1 #8)
