Biography
Tanis Nieves was a female human who lived in the modern age as one of the Nieves family with her having a younger brother. (Carnage v1 #5) When she was 6 years old, she found a maimed dog with three legs and one eye which they took the pound. Her parents had allowed her to come with it where the vet stated that they were going to put the animal to sleep. This led to Tanis screaming and crying with her biting the vet's hand causing her family to allow her to take the dog back home with her. The young Nieves came to believe that the dog needed her to love him. (Carnage v1 #3) When she was older, she came to learn that the dog was aggressive by nature with it having snapped at her whenever she brushed it and that it once bit her baby brother's face which was why the family had to put it down. (Carnage v1 #5) By the age of 26, she came to qualify as a psychiatrist and sought to help psychologically wounded people in the world. This led to her eventually becoming a head doctor at the Ravencroft Institute where she cared for her patients. (Carnage v1 #3)
She later received a prototype prosthetic arm that was actually made of the Carnage symbiote. Tanis Nieves was a psychiatrist assigned to Shriek. She lost her right arm trying to figure out what was happening to Shriek, and then her arm was replaced bio-mechanical arm that was created from Carnage. Her prosthetic starting giving her hallucinations of her colleagues dead while on her way to Hall Industries M.D. Once there she saw what they were doing to Shriek and demanded to see her. Whilst trying to convince them to let her out her prosthetic arm would not remove itself from the window of the control room. As the scientists were trying to make the arm budge, the symbiote started killing everyone. Her arm then started to strangle Tanis and in fear asked what it wanted to her response it pointed to Carnage. Doing what it asked the prosthetic started breaking the container he was in and touched a piece of his body to make him active and started bonding with Tanis. (Carnage v1 #4)
Within Shriek's grasp, she managed to hear the Symbiotic limb that Frances had with her and took it back as the spawn wanted Nieves to be its first host. Thus, Tanis allowed it to bond with her in order to stop Shriek who was using her powers to start a riot gathering. After bonding with her, she came to be referred to as Scorn where she decided to help in the battle against by Carnage by having Shriek unleash a sonic blast at him. Shriek refused and attempted to convince Nieves to not hurt her but Tanis decided to force the matter by making Frances release her blast. This caused the Symbiote suit of armor to be damaged allowing for Spider-Man to destroy it though Cletus himself had escaped as he was controlling it remotely through a Symbiotic tendril fragment. In the aftermath, Shriek herself was left in a coma with Nieves attempting to look for a way to remove the Symbiote though Spider-Man told her that it was not an easy task. He had intended to help her but the Scorn Symbiote did not like him leading to her being placed under Tony Stark's care. (Carnage v1 #5)
When Carnage first took over the town of Doverton, Colorado, Scorn was the only active symbiote who could be called on by the government to stop him after he defeated the Avengers, except for Spider-Man. Scorn was partnered with the Mercury Team that were a group of special forces wielding weapons made of the separated symbiotes that once made up Hybrid. They were then deployed to stop Carnage who has taken the town hostage. (Carnage USA v1 #3) While Spider-Man, Venom and Mercury Team deal with Carnage's minions on the streets, Scorn sneaked off to the Ralsby Meat Packing Plant. She re-worked the facility into a symbiote separator and combines a semi with a bulldozer plow. When Venom and Carnage fight their way into the facility, Scorn activated the machine which works on Flash and Cletus. She then heads back to the streets and forms a chainsaw combined with the Thing's sonic disruptor. After Venom defeats Carnage, Scorn managed to use sonic weaponry to separate the Carnage symbiote from Cletus, collecting a sample in order to deliver it to General Brandon Duggan. Several years later, the Scorn symbiote was presumably affected by the awakening of the dark elder god Knull who was the creator of the Symbiotes. This saw Tanis being corrupted becoming the high priestess of an apocalyptic cult dedicated to fully reviving him. To this end, she recovered the body of Cletus Kasady and bonded it to a sample of the Grendel symbiote - which Knull had dwelled in with the hopes of turning Cletus into Knull's avatar. While Cletus' connection to Knull proved temporary, Scorn informed him that absorbing codexes that were the trace remnants of symbiote biomass left inside hosts could amplify it. She then offered to undergo surgery to extract the codex that the Carnage symbiote had left inside her. Instead, Cletus ripped out and devoured her spinal cord seemingly killing her. Overview
Personality and attributes
She had a desire to help psychologically damaged or hurt people in the world. This stemmed from her childhood where she insisted on caring for a wounded dog and believed that the animal needed her love to get better. This led to her embarking on a career as a psychiatrist with her intending to help all the damaged creatures in the world. Tanis held that she was going to love the unloveable to allow them to know that they were not alone. (Carnage v1 #3) Despite this, she came to realise that sometimes certain people or animals had to be put down due to the danger they posed to society. (Carnage v1 #5)
It was said that her 'other' was not fond of Spider-Man. (Carnage v1 #5)
Powers and abilities
Superhuman strength, durability and stamina. Healing factor. Wall-Crawling, ESP (Spider-Sense), Immunity to Spider-Man's spider sense, Web generation, camouflage capabilities, constituent-matter generation, and is a techno hybrid (since the Scorn symbiote's birth was linked to robotic arm, the symbiote is a machine/symbiote hybrid, thus being able to fuse itself with different kind of technology).
