History

The Sea Devils were a race of intelligent reptilian aquatic humanoids that once rued the Earth during a time when mankind were simple apes. (Episode: The Sea Devils) They were noted for being cousins of the land-dwelling Silurians where both races were led by the Triad who served as the 'custodians' of their united people. (Episode: Warriors of the Deep) During the age of their kind, the Earth was said to had been covered in 'glorious aqua'. (Episode: Legend of the Sea Devils)

In 2084, a colony of Sea Devils were awakened from hibernation by the Silurians who desired their use as shock troops to invade Sea Base 4 in order to trigger a war. Though well prepared, these warriors were ultimately killed when the Fifth Doctor made use of Hexachromite gas against them. (Episode: Warriors of the Deep)

Overview

In appearance, the Sea Devils were a race of cold-blooded reptilian humanoids, with large eyes and turtle-like snouts, resembling humanoid dinosaurs more than the Silurians do. Unlike the Silurians, they do not have a third eye and rely more on hand-held weaponry. Though more aggressive than their Silurian cousins, they're more vulnerable to hexachromite, a gas lethal to reptiles which had almost instant effects on the Sea Devils as opposed to the Silurians, who lingered far longer before succumbing.

There were variations existed among the Sea Devils with different subspecies and appearances. Sea Devils typically looked somewhat like humanoid turtles or plesiosaurs. They had beak-like mouths, large eyes, two fins on their head and long necks. They had three webbed digits on their hands and feet. Their skin tones came in a variety of shades, including green, blue and orange. They were much tougher than humans, since they needed to survive the crushing depths of the ocean. Sea Devils communicated in a language like sonar, but they could speak human languages in a whispering, rasping voice. (Episode: The Sea Devils)

They were determined to retake the planet from the humans. The Sea Devils held an unwavering view that, as the original rulers, it would always be their right to do so. However, they were willing to make peace with humans, but they quickly changed their minds when they were under attack from the surface. (Episode: The Sea Devils) The Thirteenth Doctor noted that the Sea Devils were largely peacefully, fighting only if they believed it to be needed (Episode: Legend of the Sea Devils)

The Sea Devils were more advanced than the humans of the 20th century when they went into hibernation. They had colonies around the world, each filled with thousands of Sea Devils. (Episode: The Sea Devils) The colonies could be awakened en masse through the use of a sonic signal. (Episode: The Sea Devils) They built their underwater colonies inside caves. One base, located near a sea-fort, had simple grey-black-coloured walls. (Episode: The Sea Devils)
