Biography

Ivan Guerrero was a male human who was born in the modern age where one of his ancestors was an Inhuman. At some point, he had grandchildren with these including Emily Guerrero who came to stay at his home. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #4) He came to be afflicted with cancer with the months afterwards being notably hard for him as the disease had spread to his lungs. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #1) Around 8 months ago, he and his grandchildren were exposed to the Terrigen Mists that had spread around the planet which encased them in cocoons. Upon emerging, Ivan found that he could sense plants whilst his granddaughter Emily could sense animals. At the time, his grandson had not emerged with the elderly Guerrero believed that their transformation was a gift allowing them to change the world. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #4) He travelled the world afterwards over the next few months but came to see only disasters afflicting the planet on a global scale. He came to conclude that the world was dying and that it was humanity which mad it seek leading to him looking to save the Earth from this disease. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #1)

Under the alias of Shredded Man, he flooded Boston with deadly plant creatures. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #1) This also saw him releasing spores that contaminated people with a deadly pathogen. He was then attacked by one of the Avengers that went to Boston to eliminate his threat, Quicksilver, whom he easily dealt with. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #2) He later confronted the rest of the team, including his granddaughter, who was going by the alias of Synapse. During this encounter, he would come to reveal his identity to her. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #3) Ivan tried to make her see things his way but failed, leading them to battle. As he was about to be killed by his own granddaughter, the time-traveler mutant Cable intervened. Hadn't he done so, the plants would had dispersed without control and created the future from which he came. Cable then fired the antidote he had created in Synapse, leaving her vulnerable to the Shredded Man's spores. With his granddaughter about to die, the Shredded Man decided to withdraw the spore infestation and leave, but not before warning Emily that he wouldn't have pity of her the next time they met, for his love for her had disappeared. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #4)

Moving from Boston, he travelled in the sewers where he made his way to Manhattan with him attacking the city. The X-Men came to respond to the incident leading to a battle against the Shredded Man. They were unable to stop his plants despite attempts to burn or freeze them but the X-Men came to discover that these were manifestations of Guerrero's cancer. This led to Rogue attempting to find a non-violent solution to the conflict where she attempted to appeal to Ivan's humanity and desire to live. She offered to use her powers to stop his plants that were growing out of his control which would also help control his cancer. He came to accept but promised that he would not end his attempts at stopping humanity's infestation of the planet. Rogue then made physical contact through touch with him rendering him unconscious whilst she used his powers to stop the the plants rampaging in the city. (X-Men: Gold v2 #24)

Overview

Personality and attributes

In appearance, Ivan Guerrero was originally an elderly man with a grey moustache and grey white hair. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #4) He eventually took the identity of the Shredded Man. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #1)

Ivan believed that nothing could be done to save the planet as humanity doomed itself. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #4) Thus, he was resolved in bringing about a quick end to mankind to put them out of their suffering. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #3) He stated that the human species was out of balance and that the only hope of survival was by abandoning their cities to return to nature. Ivan had said that the planet had endured much harm from the disruptive acts of human civilization. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #2) He deemed humanity to be a cancer on the world and that his dying wish was to see much of it consumed before he died. (X-Men: Gold v2 #24)

After his Terrigenesis, he came to believe he was given an amazing gift. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #1)

He loved his grandchildren that included his granddaughter Emily Guerrero with him intending to make a better world for her. Though he cared for her, as the Shredded Man he stated that he would not be dissuaded from his mission even for her. However, after they battled one another, he told Emily that she had lost his love and when they met again then there would be no mercy. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #4)

Powers and abilities

Originally, he led an ordinary human life though had been afflicted with cancer that was killing him. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #1) It was said that he went through a dramatic transformation as a result of his Terrigenesis. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #3) He became attuned to the vibrations of plant life around him allowing him to manipulate it. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #1) Ivan was near invulnerable to energy attacks with blaster shots able to leave wounds that simply resealed themselves. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #3) He was able to grow other bodies for his mind to inhabit. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #4)

He had the ability to control plant-life and could make them grow at impossibly accelerated rates. Furthermore, he could craft plant organisms that could take the form of animals making them plant/animal chimeras. Despite looking like animals, they had no brain structure with a single pod for a brain and did not feel pain. They were impervious to animal-based telepathy or mental manipulation that worked on animal brains. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #2) These creatures started as simply plants that grew into pods that then manifested into full fledged organisms with all this occurring in the span of an hour. The Shredded Man could also produce large bee-like insects that were able to paralyse their victims with a sting. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #1)

Exposure to the plants could infect human beings who became gradually consumed by plant-matter. The plants dug into the bodies of their hosts until they were eventually killed in the process. From his plants, he could also produce hallucinogens to keep a person docile and encase them in cocoons where they were slowly consumed by the plants. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #2) Ivan could change the bodies of certain infected people with him having them produce high levels of neurotoxins and psychoactive spores. Once detonated, those exposed were left dying as their bodies went into anaphylactic shock. Inhumans were shown to be immune to these toxins with Mutants experiencing serious infections that could kill them. (Uncanny Avengers v3 #3)

It was said that the plants he created were a mirror and expression of his cancer. They were said to be an outward expression of what transpired within his own body. (X-Men: Gold v2 #24)
