Biography

Mirage

Oroku Saki in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles v1 #10.

Oroku Saki (Japanese: 小禄 咲) was a Japanese male born in the modern age as the younger brother of Oroku Nagi where both came to be members of the Foot Clan. His sibling had been killed by a fellow ninja named Hamato Yoshi over a feud over a woman named Tang Shen who both men had loved. The act resulted Yoshi being disgraced for killing a fellow clan member leading to him fleeing the country with Shen as they journeyed to the United States.

Following Saki's death, Karai travelled to New York City in order to unify the warring factions and place the Foot Clan under her leadership.

Several months after the death of Oroku Saki, the Shredder, on Christmas Eve, several members of the Foot, as well as the Shredder himself seemingly resurrected, would jump and beat Leonardo to the brink of death. They then throw his body through the window of the Turtles' ally April's Second Time Around store. Shredder and the Foot would attack the turtles and set the building on fire. With the help of Casey Jones, the Turtles, April and Hamato Splinter managed to escape to Casey's grandmother's old farmhouse in Northampton, Massachusetts. After months of recuperation, the Turtles returned to New York City to settle the score with their enemies. With with the help of Zog, a Triceraton suffering from delusions due to breathing Earth's oxygen, they go to take down the Foot and the Shredder once and for all. During the fight, Zog gets hacked to death by the 3 deformed "Mutant Shredder clones". The other Turtles would face them and be taken down one by one, leaving Leonardo to face the 'real' Shredder himself. Leonardo faced off against the Shredder alone, in which Shredder revealed that he was a worm clone of the original Shredder, but still harbored the hatred of the original. The Foot employed some sort of mystic worms that ate the remains of the dead, and then grow into the form of what they ate. The malformed Shredder Elite were the first three experiments with the worms, and the Shredder now facing Leonardo was their fourth. Shredder and Leonardo fought it out and in the end, Leo would end up decapitating him finally killing him. Leonardo would then take Shredder's body and burn it at the Hudson River in a Viking funeral burning on a raft on a river. With the Shredder gone, chaos erupted in New York City among the leaderless Foot Clan.

Leonardo came to encounter Oroku Yoshi who was a Battle Nexus contestant wearing armor almost identical to that of the Shredder.

Overview

Personality and attributes

Master of the Foot Clan in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Villain Micro-Series: Shredder v1 #1.

In appearance, the Shredder was a male Japanese figure who wore a specialized suit of armor. His attire consisted of a dark, sleeveless tunic that left his muscular arms exposed, though they were far from unprotected; his forearms and shins were encased in metal guards adorned with multiple rows of sharp, protruding blades. On the backs of his hands, he wore armored plates featuring two large, curved steel claws that extended over his knuckles, serving as his primary offensive weapons. His head was fully concealed by a signature metal helmet that featured a prominent, trident-like crest on the forehead and a heavy face mask that obscured everything but his cold, narrowed eyes. As the masked leader of the Foot Clan, he came to operate under the alias of the Shredder (シュレッダー, Shureddā). (Mirage Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles v1 #1)

He showed an absolute and unwavering thirst for vengeance, a trait that had dictated the entire course of his life. This obsessive drive began in his youth after his elder brother, Oroku Nagi, was killed by Hamato Yoshi during a dispute over a woman, leading Saki to join the Foot Clan specifically to sharpen himself into a lethal instrument of retribution. He proved to be a ruthless and cold-blooded leader who spent fifteen years meticulously building a criminal empire in New York City, yet he never lost sight of his singular goal to exterminate Yoshi’s legacy. Even when faced with a final defeat at the hands of the Turtles on a moonlit rooftop, his spiteful nature remained paramount; rather than accepting an honorable end through ritual suicide, he chose a path of spiteful defiance by detonating a thermite grenade in a desperate, failed attempt to take his enemies with him to the grave. In one continuity, Oroku Saki had an older brother by the name of Oroku Nagi. Saki was only seven years old when Nagi was killed by Hamato Yoshi during a brutal confrontation sparked by Nagi’s unrequited and obsessive love for a woman named Tang Shen. The relationship between the siblings was defined by a young Saki's deep-seated admiration and the profound trauma he experienced upon losing his elder brother, a loss that the Foot Clan's leadership quickly exploited. Following the tragedy, Saki’s grief was carefully molded into a singular, cold-blooded mission; he dedicated his entire adolescence to mastering the art of ninjutsu for no other purpose than to avenge Nagi. This familial bond, while barely depicted on the page, remained the driving force behind Saki’s rise to power, eventually leading him to track down and murder Yoshi and Shen in New York City to finally settle his brother's debt. Powers and abilities

Saki's ninja skills in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder v1 #1.

Oroku Saki was fundamentally human, possessing no innate supernatural powers or mutations at the time of his introduction. His physical traits were those of a man at the absolute peak of human conditioning, standing approximately 5'10" with a frame that was lean, defined, and impressively muscled from years of obsessive exertion. He achieved this state through a grueling and fanatical training regimen within the Foot Clan that began when he was only seven years old. For over a decade, he pushed his body to its breaking point, mastering the intricate arts of ninjutsu, stealth, and hand-to-hand combat with a zeal that eventually saw him surpass every other warrior in the clan by the age of eighteen. This relentless preparation transformed him into a lethally efficient athlete with reflexes and agility that bordered on the superhuman, allowing him to move with a speed that often outpaced his opponents' eyes. His training did more than just harden his muscles; it forged him into a disciplined strategist whose every movement was calculated for maximum lethality, ensuring that even without magical abilities, he remained the most dangerous combatant in the city. (Mirage Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles v1 #1)

Saki was depicted as a masterful strategist whose sharp intellect was as dangerous as his bladed armor. He possessed a shrewd, calculating mind that allowed him to transform a scattered group of assassins into a dominant and highly organized criminal empire within New York City in just a few years. His intelligence was not merely academic but profoundly practical; he demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of the "professional" side of crime, managing diverse illegal operations such as drug smuggling and arms running with cold efficiency. Beyond his business acumen, he exhibited a commanding presence and a natural authority that inspired a nearly religious level of loyalty from his Foot Ninjas, who were willing to follow his orders to the point of death. Even in the heat of his final rooftop confrontation, his tactical thinking remained evident as he initially outmaneuvered and nearly defeated all four Turtles simultaneously through superior combat logic. When his physical prowess finally failed him, his quick-witted, spiteful nature led him to use a concealed thermite grenade in a desperate gamble to turn a total defeat into a mutually assured destruction, proving that his intellect was always geared toward the ultimate elimination of his enemies at any cost. Notes

  • The Shredder was created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird where he made his first appearance in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles v1 #1 (May, 1984).
  • In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Ultimate Collection, Vol. 2 (2012), Laird commented, "In truth, though many TMNT fans who became fans via the first animated series see Shredder as a REALLY important part of an ongoing, long-running battle with the Turtles, I don't think Kevin or I ever did. Yes, he was an important part of their history, and they probably would not have come into existence without his involvement in their world (or more accurately Splinter's world)... but that's about it. Other than bringing Shredder back for "Return to New York" (and the few issues preceding that set that arc up), I never missed him in any of the other TMNT books I worked on."

Television

  • In Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation, the Shredder briefly appeared in the 1997 live-action television series where he was portrayed by actor Patrick Pon and voiced by actor Doug Parker. This time, however, Venus uses her powers to make the Oroku Saki from within taking control of Shredder's mind. After the Foot Clan disbands, he ends up living on the streets. Later, the Dragon Lord's rank warriors attack him to get a medallion that was in his possession. Splinter saves him and takes him to the Turtles' lair to protect him. It was hinted that Shredder might possibly go back to his old ways, but the show was canceled soon after that episode. In the show, Shredder wore a general attire similar to the one he wore in the second film, but with a heavily altered helmet/mask due to the lesser budget for the TV series as compared to the movies, which had allowed for more detailed props and costume pieces. Shredder appeared only a few times in the show, due to the main antagonist of the series being a draconic being from another dimension and thus supplanted Shredder as the Turtles' nemesis.
  • In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the identity of the Shredder appeared in the 2003 animated television series where it was primarily used by Ch'rell. It was revealed in the 5th season that thousands of years ago there was a demonic tengu known as the Shredder who plagued the lands of Japan. During this time, five warriors were gathered by the emperor to slay the beast with among them being Oroku Saki where they seemingly killed the tengu. However, before its defeat, it made a bargain with Oroku Saki where the two merged into a single being. Thus, the Shredder and Oroku Saki become one where they began a new reign of terror against the world. This was until their defeat against their former comrades who became the Ninja Tribunal who defeated Saki and imprisoned in the Shredder in a crypt where they kept vigil to prevent his return. By the modern age, the Utrom Ch'rell came to use the identity of the Shredder to inspire fear in his enemies and to gather the Foot Clan under his rule.
  • In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Shredder appeared in the 2012 animated television series where he was voiced by actor Kevin Michael Richardson. Oroku Saki was born in rural Japan into the ninja Foot Clan, the longtime enemies of the Hamato Clan. After a particularly devastating assault by the Hamato Clan on a Foot Clan village that left the rival ninja clan in tatters, the baby Oroku Saki was discovered amongst the wreckage by Hamato Yoshi's father. He was then adopted by Hamato Yuuta and raised alongside Yoshi as brothers; and greatest of rivals, with Oroku blissfully unaware of his true heritage. Their rivalry escalated when they met Tang Shen and subsequently fell in love with her. Saki had been with her initially but she broke it off in favor of Yoshi who she went onto have a child with and their bids for her affection turned their rivalry into hatred and Oroku Saki insulted Hamato Yoshi in front of Tang Shen, and in response was attacked by Yoshi. This brief fight ended in victory for Yoshi, while Saki fled and wandered alone. During this time Saki learned of his true heritage and rebuilt the Foot Clan and donned the moniker 'Shredder'. Sometime after this, he turned the ninja of the Hamato Clan to his side and decided to get revenge on his nemesis Yoshi and confronted him. He implored Tang Shen to come back to him but was rejected, so he attacked Yoshi at their home. During the fight that broke out, he refused to hear Yoshi out even when a fire broke out but Tang Shen tried to intervene but was accidentally killed at Saki's hand and the latter suffered a scarred face from a burning piece of wood, as. Saki also discovered the existence of Hamato Yoshi's infant daughter during this assault, and when the fire forced Saki to flee and leave an injured Yoshi to die, he took the baby with him. He later claimed that he was 'returning the favor' to Yoshi for having Tang Shen 'stolen' from him. Shredder would go on to raise the baby as his own daughter, naming her Karai and raising her to hate her true father. After the fight with Yoshi, Shredder found the ancient Kuro Kabuto worn by Foot Clan leaders in the past, and proceeded to fully transform the Foot Clan into a worldwide crime syndicate. He also freed the Brazilian street thug Xever Montes from prison and took on martial artist celebrity Chris Bradford as an apprentice; though it's not particularly clear when this latter event took place.
  • In Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Shredder appeared in the setting of the 2018 animated television series. This version was shown as being the identity of person who got taken over the demonic Kuroi Yoroi armor thus turning the wearer into the Shredder who was the beastial ruler of the Foot Clan. 500 years before the series, Oroku Saki was the leader of the peaceful Foot Clan and father of the Hamato Clan founder, Karai, whose soul was swallowed by the demonic and nigh-unstoppable Kuroi Yōroi armor after it was forged by a powerful Oni (in reality the alien Krang). After being transformed into the Shredder, Saki led the Foot down a path of darkness, unleashing unspeakable chaos across Japan in the process. With no other choice, Karai was forced to create her own clan, the Hamato Clan, to end the demon's reign of terror. Shredder continuted terrorized Japan until he was defeated by Karai using her mystic Hamato Ninpō energy (since no mortal weapon could harm Shredder) to send him into a dimension called the Twilight Realm, and the Kuroi Yōroi was scattered across the world to prevent his return. The side effect of Shredder's defeat had sent Karai into the Twilight Realm, along with Shredder's sapience being sealed away. In the aftermath, Karai's remaining followers made it their sworn duty to watch over the armor pieces and never allow the Foot to reclaim them.

Films

  • In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Shredder appeared as the main antagonist in the 1990 live-action film where he was portrayed by actor James Saito. Oroku Saki and Hamato Yoshi were rival martial artists in Japan and both loved a woman named Tang Shen. Shen, who loved only Yoshi, persuaded him not to fight Saki honorably; instead, they fled for the United States. Saki followed them to New York City; when Yoshi returned home from his construction job he found his beloved Shen lying dead on the floor, he was ambushed and overpowered by Saki. Saki wasted no words and during the struggle, Splinter's cage was broken. Splinter leaped up onto Saki's face, biting and clawing, but the rogue ninja threw him to the floor and took one swipe with his katana, slicing Splinter's ear. After this incident, it was said that Saki is never heard from again. The comic book adaptation of the film retains the original comic book origin story, with Oroku Nagi being slain and Saki coming to America to seek vengeance. Saki, in his 'Shredder' persona, establishes an American branch of the Foot Clan. With the aid of his second-in-command Tatsu, he manipulates and recruits troubled teens as a brutal yet Machiavellian leader and father figure, teaching them ninjitsu to make them into skilled thieves and assassins. Shredder sends the Foot Clan to "silence" April O'Neil when she reports on the Foot Clan's connection to the recent crime wave, inadvertently leading them to the Turtles' hideout when Raphael saves April. Shredder had Splinter kidnapped and imprisoned him in his warehouse hideout, and has the Foot Clan hunt the Turtles. He beats Splinter while interrogating him about how the Turtles learned their fighting techniques. After the Turtles successfully defeat the Foot Clan in a final assault, Shredder confronts them on a rooftop. He defeats all of the Turtles with his superior skills and threatens Leonardo with his yari to force the others to toss away their weapons. Splinter, freed by Turtles' allies, Danny Pennington and Casey Jones, intervenes and reveals to Shredder that they met years ago, as he was Hamato Yoshi's pet. Shredder unmasks himself, revealing the scars that Splinter gave him, and charges Splinter to impale him. Splinter counters with Michelangelo's nunchaku to send him over the side of the roof. Shredder throws a tanto at Splinter. Splinter caught the knife, but had to let go of the nunchaku that was holding onto the spear, making Shredder fall into a parked garbage truck far below. Casey Jones then activates the crushing mechanism; the viewers are then shown a closeup of Shredder's helmet being crushed, implying his death.
  • In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secrets of the Ooze, the Shredder returned as the main antagonist in the 1991 live-action film where he was voiced by actor David McCharen.
  • In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Shredder appeared as the antagonist in the 2014 live-action film where he was portrayed by actor Tohoru Masamune. He is the supreme leader of his own army, the Foot Clan, and he lived with them in an unknown base in New York City, from which he terrorized the entire city. He is currently frozen and contained on Krang's homeworld. He is actually acting with Sacks to defeat the Ninja Turtles and to take from them the Mutagen, a special radioactive material that created Splinter, his arch-nemesis, and Splinter's sons The Turtles. Later, Sacks tells to his master that The Turtles from Sacks' former days are still alive and living as mutated and big muscular and powerful turtles and they are need to take their mutagen blood to carry out their plan to rule over the entire city. Therefore, Sacks creates and builds for Shredder a powerful, scary and big robotic samurai suit armed with retractable blades and that gives him unlimited powerful superhuman strength and makes him more a stronger martial artist that he can ever be. After April O'Neil confides with Sacks the existence of the Turtles, the Shredder learns of the Turtles by proxy. He arrives at the Turtles' lair and easily defeats them before engaging Master Splinter. With Splinter defeated, the Shredder captures the Turtles and takes his leave. After the first battle with Shredder and Splinter's defeat, Raphael joins up with April and her cameraman Vern Fenwick to rescue the Turtles. Sacks reveals Shredder's plan to unleash chemical toxins from the roof of Sacks Tower over the entire city as toxic gas and to poison the entire city's civilians in order to rule the city and later, Sacks will save everyone with an antidote made from the mutagen in the Ninja Turtles blood, and the government will then send Sacks Industry a blank check while Shredder will force the remaining people to live under their rule. Shredder and Sacks will than be powerful and 'stupid rich'. Raphael arrives to the prison cells where his brothers are located, in Sacks' mansion and later fights with Shredder who defeats Raphael and escape away to the city with Sacks to spread the toxic gas. Later, The Turtles, O'Neil and Vern are out to stop Shredder but got into a massive car chase with Foot Clan soldiers and Karai who later is defeated and assumed as dead in the snow after the massive chase. Later, Shredder arrives to the Sacks Industries building rooftop to spread the toxic gas but then, the Turtles and Shredder are fighting each other in a intense and lengthy battle on the rooftop. After that, Fenwick manages to defeat Sacks, and later O'Neil holds the mutagen to Shredder's eyes who attacks her and takes the mutagen for himself, before that, The Turtles are still fighting him and start to defeat him after they played their own game called "Buck Buck". Later, as the satellite tower on the building is collapsing and the toxic gas spreading is being extremely stopped, Shredder, O'Neil and The Turtles are all hanging on the collapsed tower, and Shredder throws one of his own blades to The Turtles and O'Neil but then, Leonardo throws the blade to Shredder and wounds him. Later, Leo throws his own sword to Shredder's body and later, April kicks Shredder's head and makes him fall to the street below to his defeat. After the battle, the heroes have saved the entire city and the day. Shredder's suit is shattered and he is fully wounded and near-unconscious on the ground, but as the police converge on Shredder, he does manages to crawl to the spilled mutagen sample that fell with him. He touches it, healing all his scars and making him younger, shown in his mugshot.
