The behind the scenes plotting in Siege Prologue v1 #1.

The Siege

Norman Osborn launched a catastrophic and illegal strike against the kingdom of Asgard after orchestrating a tragedy in Chicago to justify his military intervention. Following a staged confrontation at Soldier Field involving the unwitting Asgardian Volstagg and the U-Foes, which resulted in massive civilian casualties, Osborn manipulated the President and the public into viewing the Norse gods as a national security threat. Despite a direct order from the President to stand down, Osborn gathered his Dark Avengers and the full might of H.A.M.M.E.R. to initiate an aerial assault on the golden city floating above Oklahoma. Ares initially hesitated to join the cause, but Osborn lied to the God of War, claiming that Loki had taken control of Asgard and needed to be ousted. As the invasion began, the Sentry struck the first blow, tearing through the city's foundations and catching the Asgardians completely off guard. Thor rushed into the fray to defend his home but was quickly overwhelmed by the combined power of Osborn’s heavy hitters, including the Sentry and Taskmaster. Meanwhile, in hiding, Steve Rogers and his underground resistance watched the televised carnage, realizing they had no choice but to assemble and intervene before the gods were slaughtered. (Siege v1 #1)

The siege intensified as Thor lay beaten and bloody beneath the combined might of Norman Osborn's forces, only to be saved by the sudden intervention of Maria Hill and a heavy-duty energy weapon. While the U-Foes and H.A.M.M.E.R. troops continued their relentless bombardment of the golden city, Ares finally realized he had been played for a fool; upon discovering that Osborn had lied about Loki's control over Asgard, the God of War turned on his commander with murderous intent. However, the betrayal was short-lived as Osborn ordered the Sentry to intervene, resulting in a horrific display of power where the golden guardian physically tore Ares in half in front of the assembled armies. This brutal execution horrified both sides, yet Osborn pushed forward, desperate to end the conflict before federal authorities could stop him. As the President officially stripped Osborn of his command and ordered the military to intercept, Steve Rogers and the true Avengers arrived on the battlefield via the Quinjet, signaling that the resistance had finally joined the war to save the gods from total annihilation. Alternate Versions

  • In Marvel Zombies v2 #1 (2015), the Siege referred to the event that impacted Battleworld in the reality that was designated as Earth-15513 in the Multiverse. On this world, God-Emperor Doom erected the Shield that was a large wall that separated the living domains from the hordes of Marvel Zombies and the Ultron robots from Perfection. Manning the Shield were the Hel-Rangers that consisted of exiled inhabitants from other domains due to crimes they had committed. As a result, the giant wall found itself constantly under siege from the various attackers on it. After another day of work at the Shield, Commander Brand bid her farewell to Leah of Hel as she prepared to go beyond the Shield to search for Illyana, her long lost lover. Kang approached Brand soon afterwards, boasting about his fighting skills and how he would subdue all the south of Battleworld to his will, which angered her. While she was telling him protecting the Shield wasn't that simple, Kang's wrist began to bleep and his future self suddenly appeared before them. Before fading away, future Kang told them the Shield would fall in twenty days, and that Thanos would doom them all. Fifteen days later, Commander Brand and her men still hadn't found Thanos. Desperate to find him before he could destroy the Shield, Brand resorted to the Unite, robots in love that betrayed Ultron and allied themselves with the Hel-Rangers of the Shield. But, as they spoke, the Unite detected a powerful army of the Ultron Engine (the greatest threat that faced the Shield which married up the technology of the Annihilation Wave with the unrelenting energy of the undead) heading towards the Shield. Brand then alerted everyone so they could prepare themselves to battle. As the Vitruvian Man prepared the Enlightment Cannon to shoot and Kang tried in vain to call chronoallies, Lady Katherine spotted someone on the front line of the Ultron Engine, which to Commander Brand's horror was none other than a monstrous Nick Fury, presumed dead commander of the Shield. Under siege and at risk of failing their duty, the Hel-Rangers of the Shield tried everything they could to stop Nick the Fury, as he was the reason why the Ultron Engine was advancing so viciously. With the Endless Summers being reduced to only one hundred men and Kang unable to navigate through the timestream thanks to chronomines, Brand sought the help of the Unite again. One of the Unite tried to use its ability to control robots to make Nick the Fury kill himself, but was killed instead. Using the remaining Unite as a distraction, Kang was able to take Nick the Fury into the timestream and pilot it into every chronomine he could.
