Sigma Technology (Impossible Creatures)
Sigma Technology is a field of science that features in the video game Impossible Creatures.
Overview
Sigma Technology was a curious field of biology that was developed by the brilliant scientist Dr. Erik Chanikov who experimented with it during the early part of the 20th century. The goal of the Sigma project was to create a means to fuse traits and features from different organisms into a single one thus creating a form of hybrid creature. Dr Chanikov continued his experiments until a failed experiment caused the Tunguska Event which killed his wife. He decided to enter into a self imposed exile in order to continue his experiments in Sigma Technology in the South Pacific on Isla Variatas. During this time, he surrounded himself with a cadre of scientists who helped him in exploring the limits of the technology and gained significant aid from greedy American industrialist Upton Julius. His experiments in discovering a method of combining two normal animals in nature into new organisms that possess the strengths of both but none of their weaknesses proves to be a success. Dr Chanikov's ultimate goal for the Sigma project was to find a means of combining genetic material at a molecular level in order to overcome biological flaws such as vulnerability to disease as well as age in order to improve the quality of life for humanity. However, the scientific community mock his work and he continued his work in secret, not aware that his wealthy backer Julius intended to use Sigma technology to conquer the world.
In the years that followed, Dr Chanikov had a son by the name of Rex Chance who unknown to many and even the boy himself was a product of Sigma technology. He was a successful experiment in Sigma technology with many animal traits being merged into him on a genetic level thus making the Sigma project a success. In 1937, Chanikov was aware of Julius's true goals and sent a letter to his son who had now become aware of his long lost father. Whilst being vague, Chanikov stated that whilst he had many years left - he wanted to see his son one last time just in case anything happened to him. His true intention was to have his son arrive on Isla Variatus in order to stop Julius's schemes and help his research assistant Dr. Lucy Willing. Shortly afterwards, Chanikov was killed by Upton Julius who maintained a near monopoly over the island through his various followers who made use of Sigma designed creatures. Upon learning of the arrival of Rex Chance, Julius knew of the boys true origin and intended to use him as part of his plans for global conquest by creating human/animal creatures. When Chance arrived, he became aware of his fathers experiments in Sigma technology and was nearly captured by Julius but later saved by Dr Willing. Facing hordes of hybrid creatures based from Sigma technology, Rex Chance reluctantly decided to team up with Lucy Willing and her allies to use the technology to create their own animal based army to fight Julius's.
During the course of the battles on the island, Chance was successful in defeating the various henchmen augmented by Sigma creatures that worked by Julius before confronting as well as defeating the industrialist himself. Later, he approached Lucy Willing and informed her of the horrors that were seen to be produced by Sigma Technology and urged her to destroy all knowledge of this science. After a brief spate, she ultimately agreed and the two erase all trace of the technology in order to prevent its abuse by people in the world. It was then that Chances true origins were revealed when it was shown that he lacked an iris - a trait similar to all Sigma based creatures.
