Biography
Origin
Simon Hurt was a male human who lived centuries ago where he was known as Thomas Wayne of the Wayne family. By adulthood, he became a devil-worshippers where he attempted to summon a demon known as Barbatos which in reality was the entity known as the Hyper-Adaptor. (Batman v1 #452) This was a hyper-dimensional creature dispatched by Darkseid to destroy Batman after the Dark Knight was struck by the Apokolipitian's Omega Effect causing him to be lost in time. In pursuit of Batman, the Hyper-Adaptor encountered Thomas Wayne where it transformed him with its energies into a being greater than human. Wayne thus became a person with an extremely long life and continued his machinations in the years after the summoning. During the 18th century, Wayne encountered another long-lived being named Vandal Savage whereupon the pair sought the secrets of eternal life that were supposedly within a mysterious wooden box. The time displaced Batman opposed the pair where he stopped them and retrieved the box after leaving the pair unconscious. (Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne v1 #4) Due to his transformation, Thomas Wayne's lifespan allowed him to survive the centuries till the modern day where he took the name Simon Hurt and began working at a doctor at the Willowood Asylum. During this time, he established himself as the head of a secretive cult known as the Black Glove. Following the death of Thomas Wayne and Martha Wayne, Hurt gathered the cult at the cemetery where he intended to destroy the Wayne family name and intended to frame Martha Wayne as a criminal. This was part of Hurt's plan to took on the identity of Thomas Wayne and steal the family fortune. However, his plans were stopped by the time-displaced Batman Bruce Wayne who escaped from the ritual and prevented Simon Hurt from succeeding in his scheme. (Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne v1 #5)
In time, he came to serve as a military consultant as he was said to had been an expert on the Batman. At this time, the military were working along with the Gotham City Police Department on an initiative to create a replacement for the Dark Knight in case he ever fell in battle as they recognised the value he had to the city. Thus, three police officers were selected to undergo training under Dr. Hurt who taught them to think like Batman as well as follow his mannerisms. Though in reality, this was all part of Hurt's twisted schemes where he corrupted their minds where he turned each of them into rogue killers that were garbed in the manner of the Dark Knight. Among these acts saw using Monster Serum on officer Branca causing the man to kill his wife and child. This ultimately resulted in officer Branca becoming Bat-Bane, officer Muller into Bat-Cop and officer Lane into the Bat-Devil. (Batman v1 #674)
Post-Flashpoint
Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.
Though buried, he survived and faced visions whilst being filled with the poison that the Joker had placed in his body. (Nightwing v4 #20) Simon Hurt had later returned where he was responsible for attempting to transform Nightwing's life through tragedy. He first targeted his girlfriend Shawn Tsang but later had Damian Wayne abducted in order to use his death to permanently scar Grayson's life. (Nightwing v4 #19) During the fight, he was stopped by the Dollotron Deathwing who betrayed him and stabbed him with the 'blade of nothing' with Hurt deciding not to fall into nothingness alone where he dragged his attacker with him. - Simon Hurt was created by Sheldon Moldoff and Charles Paris where he made his first appearance in Batman v1 #156 (June, 1963).
- The character was re-imagined by Grant Morrison during his run in Batman.
Alternate Versions
- In Convergence (2015), a version of Doctor Hurt was present among the Bottled Cities on Telos the Planet Incarnate. This Hurt along with numerous other Gotham villains pursued a Batplane piloted by the Thomas Wayne of Earth-2 who was his world's version of Batman and was accompanied by his planet's version of Richard Grayson. The pair were ambushed by the villains with Doctor Hurt ready to kill him only for Earth-2 Batman to detonate explosives on his person thus killing most of the criminals around him.
