Skeksis

The Skeksis were a race of evil, birdlike creature who ruled the ruined world of Thra from their gloomy castle, enforcing their will with the use of Garthim. They were thousands of years old and extended their lifespans in a variety of unnatural ways, including harnessing the power of the Dark Crystal and drinking the life essence of other living beings.
Originally there were eighteen Skeksis, but over time, their number dwindled to only ten. Following the death of their Emperor, there remained but nine, and only eight lived to see the Great Conjunction.
