History

Pre-Crisis

Smallville

For a brief time, the Wayne family moved from Gotham City to Smallville where they enrolled their son Bruce Wayne at Smallville High. After a string of crime, Bruce adopted the guise of a masked crime-fighter known as the Flying Fox who worked alongside Superboy. Later that year, the Wayne's left the town and returned to their home in Gotham. (Adventure Comics v1 #275)

A crime boss named Lucifer Chancel along with his gang moved into Smallville that was to become their new base of operations. (Superboy v1 #140)

Post-Crisis

Following the Crisis on Infinite Earths, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

In 1873, a time displaced Walker Gabriel came upon the town of Smallvile. (Chronos v1 #2)

After the Imperiex War, the population suffered a 20% drop leaving 110,000 people living in the town. Defense budget cuts saw the nearby military base being shut down. (Action Comics v1 #815)

Whilst investigating the presence of Kryptonite in Kansas, Superman and Batman encountered a covert black-ops facility headed by Amanda Waller that infused the substance into an elite team known as the Last Line. After defeating them, Waller unleashed her trump card which was the All-American Boy who was young volunteer soldier who took part in an experiment that infused his genes with Doomsday and merged with Kryptonite. He was unleashed against Superman with their battle taking them to Smallville. (Superman/Batman v1 #48)

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

After Brainiac's attack, a number of Smallvillians that included Mr. Santiago, Mr. Gunderson and Mrs. Takahara awoke from their coma only to learn that they had gained psionic powers. They kept their abilities hidden after seeing how mankind distrusted Superman but decided to use their abilities in secret to protect the town. This was because the damage from Doomsday had caused a tear into the Phantom Zone with a fear based entity looking to invade Earth through the rupture with the psionic powers of the Smallvillians being used to contain it in secret. (Action Comics v2 #38)

Certain towns such as Smallville experienced a phenomenon known as The Fifth Season that was a period between winter and spring that lasted a couple of weeks where the weather was very unpredictable. (Action Comics v1 #1000)

It was said to be one of the few places in the country that was not overrun with franchises and chain stores. This was a part that was said to be resistant to change. (Superman/Batman v1 #48)

A creature of legend in the Smallville ledger was The Beast of Bruin Lake. (Adventure Comics v2 #1)

Farming was a major source of revenue for the town. (Action Comics v1 #815)

  • Johnny Webber : a ginger haired male who attended Smallville High where he was a friend of Bash Bashford with the pair often bullying Clark Kent. Webber was said to be jokester who tormented people cruelly. He was exposed to Red Kryptonite which had a bizarre effect on him where it stimulated his mind to giving him 100% of his brain power. Thus, he gained psychic abilities where he took a masked supervillain identity and took the name of Dyna-Mind. (Superboy v2 #42)
  • Carl Draper : a red haired male who as a child was overweight, unattractive and clumsy leading to others picking on him except for Lana Lang leading to him becoming infatuated with her. Draper was in love with her but she never noticed and she had her eyes on Superman. He later changed his life around through exercise and plastic surgery where he developed skills in locksmithing and designing traps. Eventually, he had a contract to built the Mount Olympus Correctional Facility in Metropolis but Superman gained the credit leading to Draper becoming the criminal called the Master Jailer. (Superman v1 #332)
  • Lex Luthor :
  • Humpty Dumpty : a costumed criminal also known as the Hobby Robber where he came to repeatedly challenge Superboy after learning of Smallville's superhero. (Superboy v1 #6)
  • William Wright : a seemingly meek man who actually had the ability to mentally control others and empower himself with their belief where he became a supervillain known as Minds-Eye with him operating as an examiner at Smallville High School. (Superboy v2 #36)
  • Lucifer Chancel : a male black haired crime boss with a gaming motif who had incredible luck where he went under the name of the Gambler and set up a base of operations in Smallville where he attempted to use his good fortune to outwit Superboy. (Superboy v1 #140)
  • Simon Valentine : a young male student at Smallville High who was incredibly intelligent who had a passion for science with history regarding him as Connors Kents greatest friend and greatest enemy. (Adventure Comics v2 #1)

Notes

  • Smallville was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster where it made its first appearance in More Fun Comics v1 #101 (January, 1945).

In other media

Television

  • In Superman, Smallville made several appearances in the 1988 Ruby Spears animated television series.
  • In Smallville, the town of Smallville featured in the setting of the live-action television series.
  • In Legion of Super-Heroes, the town of Smallville appeared in the setting of the animated television series starting in the pilot. It was shown that in the early 21st century that it was the home of young Superman when Clark Kent go a job as a copyboy in Metropolis. Before he moved, he was visited by members of the Legion of Super-Heroes who took him to the 31st century where he worked alongside them as Superman.
  • In Young Justice, Smallville made an appearance in the animated television series in the episode "True Colors". After the arrival of the Reach, LexCorp constructed a farm in the town that was being used to produce special drinks called Reach that was claimed by the aliens to be rich in supplements. Jonathan Kent arrived on a tour where he expressed concern that this would drive the farmers out of business. The Team infiltrated the site due to suspicious of duplicity on the Reach and LexCorp where they discovered that the drink produced had the qualities of an additive which the aliens had intended to use to enslave humanity.
  • In Superman & Lois, Smallville appeared in the setting of the live-action television series.

Films

  • In Superman: The Movie, Smallville appeared in the 1978 live-action film.
  • In Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, Smallville appeared in the setting of the 2010 direct-to-DVD animated film. After the arrival of Kara Zor-El to Earth, Superman had intended for his cousin to live on the farm in Smallville until she was ready for the outside world.
  • In Man of Steel, Smallville appeared in the setting of the live-action film set in the DC Extended Universe.

Video games

  • In DC Universe Online, Smallville made an appearance in the setting of the MMOPG video game.
  • In DC: Unchained, Smallville was referenced in dialogue in the setting of the mobile video game with it being said to had been the home of Superman and was where he was raised by his adoptive parents.
