History

Species 8472 were an extradimensional race of tripedal beings that evolved in another dimension known as Fluidic Space where they were the only native lireform. At an unknown point, the Borg Collective sought to conquer races from other dimensions. With that goal, they used their technology to open a doorway to Fluidic Space. The natives were designated as Species 8472 and deemed the epitome of biological perfection. As such, they were targeted for assimilation but underestimated their foe whose advanced biology made them immune to Borg nanoprobes. In response, Species 8472 went through the dimensional doorway where they entered the Delta Quadrant in the Milky Way galaxy where they waged an invasion. Species 8472 intended to eliminate all other species that they deemed weak and inflicted heavy casualties on the Borg Collective who were helpless against this enemy. (Episode: Scorpion)

Overview

In appearance, Species 8472 were a race of tripedal non-humanoids that were able to withstand the vacuum of space. (Episode: Prey) They were noted for being a telepathic species who communicated to others with their mind. The race was noted for being the epitome of biological perfection with their cells individually containing more than 100 times the DNA of a human cell. As a result, they were noted for being among the most densely coded lifeforms known. (Episode: Scorpion)

Their immune system was highly potent as it was able to destroy any form of foreign body within their body's systems whether it was biological, chemical or technological. Such intrusions were instantly destroyed and was the reason why they were immune to the assimilation efforts of the Borg. Though a biological defense system, this could be used offensively by Species 8472 in close quarters where they used their claws to scratch at enemies. Once struck, a victim was infected by cells from Species 8472 that proceeded to consume the host body from the inside out. (Episode: Scorpion)

Specially calibrated nanoprobes were used to stun or sedate a member of the species. (Episode: Prey)

Races such as humans were considered genetically impure though a member of the Species 8472 stated that she found their art as being beautiful. (Episode: In the Flesh)
