History
The Sphere Builders were an advanced species of humanoids that were native to a trans-dimensional realm. Thus, they sought to alter a region of space within the Milky Way Galaxy to make it habitable for their kind as a prelude to invasion with this creating the Delphic Expanse. Through their technology, they came to learn that in the future the United Federation of Planets would thwart their efforts and thus they sought a means of stopping them by eliminating humanity in the mid-22nd century. To accomplish this, they sought proxies and the came to find prospective candidates among the Xindi civilization. (Episode: Azati Prime) To the Xindi, the Builders appeared before their kind and guided their scattered people to habitable worlds thus saving them following the destruction of their home planet. As a result, the Xindi species came to revere the Sphere Builders and referred to them as the "Guardians". (Episode: The Council) Other species affected by this change were the Triannon where a number of their kind became fanatical zealots who revered the spheres and their Makers. They considered the Delphic Expanse being transformed into a "chosen realm" with the anomalies as being the "Maker's Breath". These Triannon believed that the Makers were transforming the Delphic Expanse into paradise for their worshippers. (Episode: Chosen Realm)
In order to test their ability to survive in the Delphic Expanse, the Sphere Builders launched a male subject within a small pod into the trans-dimensional disturbance. This test pilot was discovered by the crew of the NX Enterprise who believed him to be stranded and moved to rescue him. His recovery led to a rapid form of cellular degeneration to impact his body as the subject was now outside his native realm. During his time on the Enterprise, he attempted to destroy the vessel in order to prevent them from completing their mission within the Expanse only to die from the environment. (Episode: Harbinger)
One of the Guardians was summoned before an incomplete Xindi Council consisting of the Xindi-Mammals and Xindi-Sloth where they questioned her on her involvement in helping building a bio-weapon for the Xindi-Reptilians whilst providing them the means to time travel to Earth's past. She would admit involvement in the matter but claimed it was to protect the Xindi Council as the Reptilians and Insectoids threatened to leave it. (Episode: Damage)
The Sphere Builders coaxed the Reptilians into betraying the other Xindi races under the guise of claiming that the destruction of Earth would lead to their kind being in charge of a new unified Xindi empire. (Episode: Countdown)
In the 26th century, the Sphere Builders had launched their attempted invasion against the inhabitants of the Milky Way galaxy bringing them into conflict with the United Federation of Planets. The unified races came to work together in an alliance that included the Xindi that successfully managed to repel the invaders in the decisive battle of Procyon V and send them back to their transdimensional realm. (Episode: Azati Prime)
Overview
As trans-dimensional beings, their physiology was incompatible with that of normal space such as that in the Milky Way galaxy. (Episode: Azati Prime) Normally, the Sphere Builders were unable to survive in conditions that did not mimic their native dimension. Pockets of such space did allow them to manifest in certain locations that were harmful to normal sentient beings. Their extra-dimensional nature meant that they were able to walk through normal matter and were immune to standard energy weapons. Only energy blasts set as a specific modulation were able to force the Sphere Builders back. As such, this trans-dimensional properties allowed them to disrupt machinery by phasing their limbs into equipment or even project balls of energy capable of throwing their targets backwards. (Episode: Zero Hour)
The transdimensional beings were responsible for creating the Sphere stations that were designed to reconfigure space to make it more inhabitable for the Sphere Builders. (Episode: Azati Prime) Each was able to emit massive amounts of gravimetric energy that were able to affect the anomalies in distorted regions of space. (Episode: Anomaly)
Though a temporal power, the aliens were unable to use their technology to witness small acts within the timeline. Instead, they were only able to determine large changes in history and determine the odds of success on a given action. (Episode: Countdown) They claimed that there were limits to what they could accomplish in the normal realm. (Episode: Damage)

- In Star Trek Online, the Sphere Builders appeared in the setting of the MMORPG where they were identified as the Tuterians. They were originally a species native to the Delta Quadrant who faced a threat from the Borg Collective. To better defend themselves, they attempted to use the Solanaes technology against the Borg but this resulted in disaster as this inadvertently altered their own biology making them incompatible with normal space.
