History

The Spider Seekers were fast moving hovering drones that were constructed by Spencer Smythe. They were built after Smythe was employed by Norman Osborn to find and capture Spider-Man. Unknown to anyone else, Osborn himself was blackmailed and under the control of the Kingpin of crime. Spencer Smythe agreed to this venture in exchange for a hover chair for his son Alistair Smythe who lost the use of his legs due to a laboratory explosion. Whilst at Oscorp, Smythe designed a series of drones that could find and track Spider-Man. Once complete, he deployed them into Manhattan where they found Spider-Man and attacked him but were destroyed. Though Osborn called this a failure, Spencer stated that the Spider Seekers were not meant to defeat Spider-Man but to test the tracking program. Thus, he unveiled his true creation to capture Spider-Man which was the Spider-Slayer with the first such machine designated as the Black Widow.

In a subsequent encounter, the Spider-Seekers were upgraded and redeployed to act as battlefield support units during Smythe’s efforts to eliminate Spider-Man. This time, the machines demonstrated improved coordination, working in groups to box Spider-Man in and cut off his avenues of escape. They emitted powerful searchlights and broadcast mechanical noises designed to intimidate and disorient him while pursuing him across the city. Despite their enhancements, Spider-Man once again exploited his agility and webbing to outmaneuver them, using his environment to trap the machines in narrow corridors or disable them by tearing away critical components. The Spider-Seekers were deployed repeatedly by Smythe in later episodes as auxiliary hunters whenever new Spider-Slayer models were tested. During one such appearance, they operated in conjunction with larger Slayer machines, acting as scouts that located Spider-Man and transmitted his position back to their master. Their swarm tactics proved difficult to handle, as Spider-Man had to divide his attention between dismantling the Seekers and evading the larger, more powerful Slayers. Nevertheless, he systematically webbed and destroyed them, often turning their momentum against them by causing them to collide with walls, vehicles, or each other.

Overview

In appearance, the Spider-Seekers were compact, insectoid drones designed primarily for reconnaissance rather than direct combat. Each unit consisted of a rounded central body housing its surveillance systems. A mounted forward camera lens served as their 'eye', glowing faintly when active, and provided their user with a direct feed to their targets movements. They lacked the heavier armor and bulk of the Spider-Slayers, instead relying on speed, maneuverability, and small size to slip into tight spaces and track their quarry undetected.

Equipped with high-resolution camera systems, they could transmit live visual data back to their controller, allowing them to monitor the exact position of their quarry in real time. Their locomotion enabled them to shadow him across the urban landscape, navigating rooftops, alleys, and interiors with silent precision. Although not heavily armed, their persistence and numbers made them a significant nuisance, forcing their target to dedicate time and energy to smashing or webbing them before they could reveal his location. They functioned best in swarms, with multiple Seekers tracking him from different angles to ensure escape was nearly impossible once spotted.
