History

An active Stargate.

The Stargate was a transportation device that was created by the advanced race of beings called the Ancients.

Millions of years ago, the first evolution of the human race came to emerge in a distant galaxy where they came to be known as the Alterans. However, a philosophical division soon emerged among the Alterans, dividing them into two races, known as the Ancients, who came to rely more heavily on science and rationality, and the Ori, who continued to become more and more fervent in their religious beliefs. Merlin indicated however, that when the Ori started out they had good intentions which had become corrupted. Ultimately, the Ori became so extreme in their beliefs that the two sects split apart and began to oppose each other, culminating in the Ori attempting to wipe the Ancients out. In this time, an Alteran named Amelius came to come upon the design of the machine that would become the Stargate. However, by this point, the Alteran Ancients were too few in numbers and were ultimately forced to hide their ways. Though they considered using their knowledge to defend themselves, they faced a war of attrition, one they ultimately believed that they could not win. To avoid genocide, the Alteran Ancients built a ship and left their home galaxy, while the Alteran Ori remained. After many thousands of years, the exiled Alterans discovered the Milky Way. In 1945, the U.S. Air Force conducted a secret experiment with the Stargate where they activated it. This saw Dr. Ernest Littlefield travelling through the gate but all contact was lost with him once the wormhole closed down. (Episode: The Torment of Tantalus)

Overview
