From the Ashes
After the fall of Krakoa, Noriko returned home to Japan. While visiting her cousins in the Yamaguchi Prefecture, the city of Sorachi-Shi was attacked by a bio-engineered sludge-like creature created by Fujikawa Research Group. Noriko sought shelter away from the creatures with dozens of civilians. When X-Force, led by Forge, arrived in Sorachi-Shi to investigate the world-ending 'fracture', Noriko mistakenly attacked them in order to protect the civilians. Upon recognizing the team, Noriko assisted them in fending off the creatures. After the threat was neutralized, Noriko joined X-Force and traveled with her new team to the Forest of Torment in Wakanda. (X-Force v7 #1)
Overview
Personality and attributes
Very forthright and strong-minded, Nori often clashed with her peers and superiors, from nearly getting into a brawl with Hellion after he insulted Prodigy's baseline status post-M-Day. (New X-Men v2 #21)
It was shown that she had several relatives still living in Japan. (X-Force v7 #1)
Powers and abilities
She was noted to be able to speak Japanese. (New Mutants v2 #9)
At the time of M-Day, O*N*E came to classify her as a General Threat. (X-Men: The 198 Files v1 #1) Meanwhile, Nimrod came to categorise her as a Threat Level: High. (New X-Men v2 #31) After defeating the advanced Sentinel, O*N*E came to reclassify her in their database. (New X-Men v2 #33)
As a Mutant, Surge was born with powers where she could generate electricity though initially she struggled in controlling them which resulted in power surges around her. (New Mutants v2 #9) As a result, she could not use any electronics and not even take a shower. (New Mutants v2 #8) She attempted to control her abilities through the use of medication and drugs. (New Mutants v2 #9) It was said that her physiology sped up her addiction to drugs. When fully charged, her brain tended to move too fast for her to be able to control it. To help her, special gauntlets were created to help her regulate the flow of her powers. This allowed her to control when and where she could discharge her electrical abilities. When Noriko was fully charged, she could channel her powers safely into the gauntlets and avoid a mental overload. (New Mutants v2 #10)
Noriko could expend her power which required her to recharge by draining nearby electrical sources. (New Mutants v2 #10)
Notes
- Surge was created by Nunzio DeFilippis, Christina Weir and Keron Grant where she made her first appearance in New Mutants v2 #8 (January, 2004).
- In an interview, writer Chris Yost commented about Surge's position as a team leader, "Surge is the right candidate, because she wants it the least. And you'll see, it's taking a big toll on her. Being a leader when you're doing team sports and field day exercises is one thing, but leading when the stakes are life and death is another thing."
Alternate Versions
- In Age of X-Man: The Amazing Nightcrawler v1 #2 (2019), an alternate version of Surge appeared in a reality that was created by X-Man. In a new plane of existence, a world where all forms of love was deemed illegal, Noriko was an actress with Mastermind Studios. Being part of a rivalry to Studio X, Noriko joined fellow members and studio head, Regan Wyngarde, during a meeting with Nightcrawler in hopes to have both studios come together and work with each other. Noriko listened at the table as Regan and Kurt went back and forth fighting over the joint effort. Kurt said no to the proposition, which forced Regan to leave the room along with Noriko, who quickly told Meggan Puceanu that she loved her work.
