Biography

Joey Monteleone was a male human born in the modern age on Earth where he resided in Keystone City with him being the younger brother of Jack Monteleone. In time, his older brother came to drug czar who developed a reputation and came to be known as the 'candy man'. From a young age, he showed the power of astral projection allowing him to possess inanimate objects with him using his abilities to entertain himself. By the time he was 22 years old, he used his abilities and came to inhabit a vat of asphalt with him being stuck in this form. (The Flash v2 #174)

Now he remains in that hot tar pit while his real body remains unconscious and is being abused by his padded-cellmate in Iron Heights Penitentiary.

In his new form, he attacked the Keystone City ice hockey game in order to steal the Stanley Cup for himself. After fighting some of the players, he came to be confronted by both the Flash and Captain Cold. Wally West came to struggle against Tar Pit's malleable form but came to trick the villain into dismembering his tar form. Joey was not killed as his body was reforming though it was doing so slowly allowing him to be apprehended by the authorities. The fight between the Flash and Tar Pit served as a distraction for Captain Cold who then managed to steal the trophy for himself. (The Flash v2 #174)

Later on, telepathically controlled gorillas staged an attack on Iron Heights in order to free Gorilla Grodd. This saw them freeing the jail cells of many of the Pipeline's super-criminals with Tar Pit being among them. The Flash attempted to round up the supervillains leading to a brief fight with Tar Pit. (The Flash v2 #192)

In Infinite Crisis, "Joey" became a member of the Secret Society of Super Villains.

Most recently, he has been seen among the new Injustice League and is one of the villains featured in Salvation Run.

In Blackest Night crossover, Tar Pit is shown with Owen Mercer, visiting his father's grave, accompanying Owen in his search for the Black Lantern version of his father on the grounds that he will be of no interest to the Black Lantern Corps as his tar-based form has no heart for them to take.

Post-Flashpoint

Following the Flashpoint, a new version of reality was created with a different history of events.

Overview

Personality and attributes

He was noted for not being very intelligent and was still coming to terms with his malleable form. (The Flash v2 #174)

Joey was said to had used his powers to entertain himself and take 'joy rides' in different inanimate objects until he got trapped in burning tar. (The Flash v2 #174)

He had an older brother named Jack Monteleone who operated as a local drug lord. (The Flash v2 #174)

Powers and abilities

Monteleone had the natural talent of astral projection whereby his mind could inhabit inanimate objects. He was able to manipulate these objects to a degree until his mind returned to his body. This changed when his mind came to inhabit a vat of hot asphalt where it became trapped in this state. Tar Pit’s body was made of molten asphalt and burnt on the touch. He was able to trap people in the substance of his body and could hurl flaming chunks of tar at his enemies. Due to his body being made of tar, Tar Pit was practically invulnerable with him able to reform his body if dispersed. (The Flash v2 #174)

Before becoming Tar Pit, Joey was able to project his consciousness into inanimate objects and animate them.
