The Box is a device that features in Batman Forever.

History

The Box was a mind reading device constructed by the scientist Edward Nygma during his employment in Wayne Enterprises. It was intended to be a revolutionary new piece of technology to serve as a means of transmitting brainwaves through television and using it to create 3D images. Nygma attempted to showcase the device to his employer, Bruce Wayne but the CEO of Wayne Enterprises could only see the potential for abuse. As a result, he decided to not go forward with any further development on the project. This decision greatly angered Edward Nygma who tested the machine on himself during a late night at work but the device led to him going insane. He became more psychotic due to the influence of the Box and became fixated on gaining revenge against Bruce Wayne. After leaving Wayne Enterprises, he sought out the criminal known as Harvey Dent aka "Two Face" and enlisted him as a business partner. Together, they would work in mass producing the Box's for the citizens of Gotham City which saw the rise of the company called NygmaTech. Whilst sold as an entertainment tool, the more sinister aspect of the technology was for Nygma to use it to boost his own heightened intelligence by linking it to more minds. He became the criminal known as the Riddler who began to challenge the Batman. At some point, he used the Box technology to read the mind of Bruce Wayne and learnt that he lived a separate life as the vigilante known as Batman. During a confrontation with the caped crusader, Batman threw a Batarang that struck against the central Box receiver which caused Nygma to forget everything he had learnt whilst he had become a criminal mastermind.

Overview

These devices were capable of linking themselves to the human mind and projecting 3D images as a form of entertainment. A more sinister ability was the capacity to link to multiple human brains and increasing the intelligence of the operator of the machine.
