The Messenger (Legion of Super Heroes)
The Messenger is a technological artifact that features in Legion of Super Heroes.
History
The Messenger was a a Kryptonian device created by the scientist Jor-El when he discovered that internal pressures on his homeworld of Krypton meant that the planet was becoming increasingly unstable and would have led to its destruction. In order to combat this, Jor-El created by the Messenger which was a crystalline artifact shaped as a reddish sphere with large spikes protruding all across its body. The sphere itself was smaller then a Human head but the long spikes made it appear larger.
This device worked by controlling crystals and was used to help stabilize the core of the planet. It was placed within the capital city of Kandor where it helped stave off the planet's destruction until The Terror arrived who shrunk the city taking both the Kandorians as well as the Messenger into space. The lack of the Messengers stabilizing powers ment that the planet exploded thus ending Kryptonian civilization except for the shrunken city. To protect the power of the device, the Kandorians hid underneath a temple in their city with a secret map showing the way. While not sentient or aware, the crystal shaping powers of the Messengers meant that numerous crystal formations were made near it making a trip towards it a dangerous task.
Imperiex discovered the history of the Messenger from the Legion's databanks and joureyed to the Fortress of Solitude in order to shrink himself as well as his forces into Kandor to search for the artifact. He was, however, thwarted in his goals by Superman, the Legion and a newly yellow sun empowered Kandorians. The Messenger was then taken for a new purpose where it was placed within the shattered remains of the planet Krypton. Once placed in the centre of the asteroids, the crystal controlling nature of the Messenger began to coalesce the various fragments of the former world and recreated it thus making Krypton reborn.
