Thule Medallion (Wolfenstein)
The Thule Medallion is the name of an artifact that featured in Wolfenstein.
History
There were actually several pieces of the Thule Medallion, the first being uncovered by the Nazi's during the height of World War II. A high ranking German General was given the artifact but was killed by a spy from the Office of Secret Actions called B.J. Blazkowics on the Tripitz which was attempting to aim a missile at London. However, Blazkowics was discovered and told to remove a glowing artifact within the Generals coat. Once removed, the Germans thought it was a bomb and attempted to gun the spy down but the artifact nullified the bullets and killed the Nazi soldiers thus demonstrating its unearthly power. Returning to base, Blazkowics reported on the medallion though little was known of it.
The medallion was discovered by Sergei Kolkov, a member of the Golden Dawn who attempted to recover it from ruins outside the town of Isenstadh. However, Kolkov was captured by the Nazi's during World War II and interrogated by forces under the command of General Viktor Zetta who wished to learn more about the artifact. A dig site was established with the purpose of locating this artifact. However, the Office of Secret Actions became suspicious of the Nazi activity and sent agent B.J. Blazkowics who freed Kolkov and recovered the artifact. Though Kolkov asked for it to be given to him, agent Blazkowics refused to do so until he learnt more of the Golden Dawn. Reluctantly, Kolkov agreed and gave him a nachstone crystal which powered the medallion. He later briefed the spy of the Thuel medallion's capabilities and that the Nazis were excavating an ancient portal within the area. Sergei told the agent to stop them before they could accomplish their plans.
Once inside, Blaskowics discovered another nachstone crystal and used it to gain a new ability for the medallion as well as use it to escape from being crushed by a trap set off in the ruins. Another crystal was found beneath a farmhouse where the Nazi's were studying the material.
Background
The Thule Medallion was a hand sized circular artifact with numerous jewels upon its surface. It was a complex magical device which was capable of transporting its user into the Veil which was a barrier between the corporeal realm and that of the Black Sun dimension. Once activated, the users perception of reality was somewhat altered giving surrounding an ethereal type of quality. This allowed the owner of the medallion to see the weak spots in others and also made them faster than they would be in the real world. Inside this realm, the user was also capable of seeing otherworldly beings such as the native Geists that lived within the Veil. There were also doorways that could only be accessed through the Veil allowing its user to travel to locations that were not possible in the physical realm. In addition to this, they allowed enemies to be seen easier and also revealed items that held secrets that could escape the eyes of normal mortals. However, entry and exit from the Veil drains the artifact of its limited energy reserve which meant it had to be used sparingly.
After the recovery of a second nachstone crystal, the medallion gained the additional ability of Mire. This power allowed the user to slow down time in its surroundings. A third nachstone provided the Shield power which projected a mystical energy field around the user that protected them from bullets, energy attacks and similar hazards.
A vital element in the use of the Thule Medallion were special crystals located only in Isenstaht called nachstone crystals. Once placed in front of the artifact, they were absorbed by the medallion which was energised by its energy. Further crystals discovered activated more abilities within the device. One method of recharging the medallion of its energy lay within the Veil itself. Inside, the user was capable of seeing rare pools of energy which were actually energy from Black Sun itself which could be absorbed to power the device. Furthermore, the Nazi's managed to develop a means of trapping Veil energy within containers which were capable of being accessed by the device.
