Biography

Origin

John Proudstar was a male Apache Mutant born in the modern age to Neal Proudstar and Maria Proudstar with him having a younger brother in James Proudstar. (X-Force v1 #-1)

Upon his discharge, he received his papers after two years in the marines that led to him returning to civilian life where he decided to return back to Camp Verde. (X-Force v1 #-1)

Legacy

His body was returned to his family who were angry at the X-Men as they blamed Xavier for the death of John Proudstar. James was responsible for preparing his body for the funeral where he vowed to take revenge against Professor Xavier for the death of his brother. (Classic X-Men v1 #3)

During the Chaos War, Amatsu-Mikaboshi destroyed the dreaming causing all the living to fall into a deep slumber and then shattered the underworld causing the souls of the dead to arise from the afterlife. Thunderbird awoke alongside many deceased members of the X-Men where he gathered them under his leadership with them coming under attack from the Apache trickster god Carrion Crow. (Chaos War: X-Men v1 #1)

House of X

Later on, Mutants came to establish a sovereign nation for their kind on the living island of Krakoa. By this point, they had also developed the Resurrection Protocols allowing them to resurrect dead Mutants. Among them was Thunderbird who was brought back to life. (X-Men: The Trial of Magneto v1 #5)

Notes

  • Thunderbird was created by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum where he made his first appearance in Giant-Size X-Men v1 #1 (May, 1975).
  • In Wizard (1993), Cockrum wrote in the magazine, "..we created him as an obnoxious loudmouth, and we already had an obnoxious loudmouth in Wolverine. So one of us decided to kill him off after all, just for shock value."
  • As noted in CBR, Claremont had said, "He figured there are two ways to do this. One, you spend years, if not decades, building up a relationship between the audience and a character, building the emotional bonds between them so when something happens to that character the audience is devastated. Or you do it right off the bat, when no one is expecting it."
